First information open house set for prospective graduate students

February 19, 1998

KALAMAZOO -- Western Michigan University will present its first Graduate Program Open House on Tuesday, March 17, for persons contemplating pursuing a graduate degree.

The event will take place from noon to 2 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. in the East Ballroom of the Bernhard Center. It is being co-sponsored by the Graduate College and the Office of Admissions and Orientation.

"The open house will be a source of information about the numerous professional, graduate and career development programs offered through WMU," said Dr. Shirley Clay Scott, dean of the Graduate College.

Scott noted that representatives from all of the University departments that offer graduate programs will be in attendance, providing informational materials and answering questions. In addition, she said, staff members from the Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships, Counseling and Testing Services, Career Services and the Graduate College also will be on hand.

"WMU strives to accommodate everyone who seeks an advanced degree," said Paula J. Boodt, coordinator of graduate admissions and recruitment. "Our broad range of programs and services reflects our commitment to all students, from undergraduates who move right into a graduate program to working professionals who return to school years after getting their bachelor's degree."

WMU offers 65 master's degrees, two specialist degrees and 23 doctoral degrees as well as several specialized graduate certificate programs through six degree-granting colleges: Arts and Sciences, Education, Engineering, Fine Arts, Haworth College of Business, and Health and Human Services.

Graduate students make up about one-quarter of the University's enrollment, putting WMU third in the number of graduate students among Michigan's 15 public universities.
