KALAMAZOO -- A housing fair planned for Thursday, Jan. 22, at Western Michigan University will make shopping for next fall's living accommodations easier for students.
The fair, sponsored by WMU's Office of Off-Campus Life, will take place from noon to 6 p.m. in Rooms 208 and 209 of the Bernhard Center. Landlords who control the majority of the housing available to students will attend, as well as representatives from WMU's Office of Residence Hall Facilities and the WMU Campus Apartments. Providers of various housing-related services and resources also will be on hand.
"This is the fourth time all of our major student housing providers will come together in one place to permit students to shop and compare what is available to them," said Albert W. Laaksonen, director of off-campus life.
"We know from experience that students like to locate next fall's housing before they leave campus at the end of the winter semester," Laaksonen said. "This activity starts in November and peaks in April. Many landlords will have a large number of their units already rented for next fall by the time the winter semester is over, so students can't start too soon."
All of the landlords who will attend the housing fair are registered with the University and carry the "Seal of a Good Landlord." This means that their facilities meet or exceed standards required by local, state and federal guidelines. It also means they agree to use leases and other rental forms that are free of illegal or unfair clauses.
"More importantly," Laaksonen says, "these landlords agree to mediate rental disputes with WMU students. The Office of Off-Campus Life provides a conflict resolution service for this purpose."
