13 named to new advisory council for accountancy

KALAMAZOO -- Thirteen business executives have been named to a new Department of Accountancy Advisory Council in the Haworth College of Business at Western Michigan University.

The purpose of the group is to provide the department with the perspective of professionals working in public accounting, industry, financial services and other businesses. The council conducted its first meeting earlier this fall and is expected to meet twice a year.

"They have already provided excellent advice relating to the accountancy department's mission and objectives, recruiting and retention of students, need for student internships and other aspects of our curriculum," said Dr. Jack M. Ruhl, chairperson of the department.

The council is a mix of alumni and others with a strong interest in WMU's accountancy program. Members serve for two- or three-year terms.

With 630 undergraduate and graduate students, WMU's Department of Accountancy is one of the largest programs in the country. It is part of the Haworth College of Business, which is among a select 25 percent of U.S. business schools that are accredited at both the undergraduate and graduate levels by the AACSB-The International Association for Management Education. The department is in the process of seeking an additional separate accounting accreditation for the first time from the AACSB.
