WMU Wellness

Chad Avery
“It’s a great program; I wish more folks would get involved,” says Chad Avery,
arborist with WMU’s Landscape Services Department. In 2006 he heard a
convincing presentation about the One-to-One Wellness Program being piloted
at WMU. “It was a no brainer,” he said. “Where else could I get a confidential
and comprehensive wellness assessment with recommendations and
follow-up support for free,” he laughs. “I am more confident about my health
and doing my job, and really glad I am making this investment so that I can
really enjoy my later years,” he says with a healthy grin.

Mary Peterson
Mary Peterson, a clinical specialist in the WMU Speech Pathology and Audiology
Department, joined the Western Wellness One-to-One Program during the
pilot phase because work and family responsibilities were cramping her commitment to fitness and she had “put on a few pounds.” Having watched her parents both suffer from chronic diseases due to lifestyle choices, she had both awareness and motivation guiding her decision. “I found the One-to-One staff to be non-judgmental and very supportive in helping me find ways to get back on track. Mine is not some sort of BEFORE and AFTER miracle story. I have improved in some areas and maintained in others. The most important thing is that the program helps me keep my health on the priority list with other demands for my time and attention.”

Linda Doremus
When the folks from Holtyn & Associates came to Linda Doremus to schedule rooms at the Bernhard Center for the One-to-One Wellness Program health assessments, she took note of the program. She describes herself as interested and ready for some health changes. When she got a personal invitation from the wellness coaches that
was the incentive she needed. “I knew from the beginning that what I said was confidential and I felt comfortable saying and asking the questions that were on my
mind. It was with my coach that my thinking process began to change. I needed be brave enough to give what seemed like an impossible feat a try”. Being in the program has become a life altering process in which Linda’s medical conditions are under control for the first time in many years. “In this program I was ‘strongly encouraged’ to set goals and, with the support I received, succeeded in meeting them. I am very proud of my accomplishments but there will always something new to factor in. Wherever you are, it always starts with one step.”
