What we commonly refer to as a website at WMU (president's office website) is actually a section within a website, Western Michigan University. The distinction is important, especially in the context of an enterprise content management system.
Column one is used for links to pages within the section, and only to pages within the section. The section navigation should be replicated on every page in the section, so that visitors to the section can navigate to any part of the section from any page in the section.
Column one should contain no more than 12 text links and no images. Each link may have up to 12 sub-links. Each section is allowed a maximum of three levels (link, sub-link, sub-sub-link).
At the top of the column is the name of the section, which should match the H1 head in column two on the section's home page. The name of the section links to the section's home page.
The following applies to all sections representing offices and departments of the University.
- All links use title case (cap all key words).
- Do not use ampersands (&), and do not use ALL CAPS.
- Two links—Name of Section (home) and Contact Us—are required. Name of Section is always the top (first) link in the column. Contact Us is always last (the bottom link). Directory, if used, should be next to last link, above Contact Us. All other links should be listed alphabetically below Name of Section.
Required links for academic departments
Name of Section
Listed are common links for WMU Web sections. The list indicates the name of the link, where the link should be placed, and a recommended URL. No office or department is expected to include all of the information implied by the links, but if, as an example, a mission statement is included, the name of the link should be "Mission," and it should be under "About."

Specify custom URLs for every page (in WMU CMS)
Generally speaking, you will want to enter a custom URL for every page in the site, except the home page—even if the system-generated URL is the same as what you would assign in the Unique URL field. This is to protect you in the event that the page title is changed. If, at any point in the future, the page title is changed, and you haven't assigned a custom URL, your URL will automatically change to reflect the new page title, and you'll be left with 404s throughout your section.
You should never enter a custom URL on the section home page.
