Auditions for the University Symphonic and Concert Bands are held on the first day of classes each semester in the School of Music's home, the Dalton Center. The procedure is similar each semester; simply come by the main floor 1400 wing and look for the studio of the professor who teaches the instrument you play. A list of audition times will be posted on the door. Sign up for a time, usually about ten minutes, and that's about all there is to it!
For Fall auditions, bring in something to play with which you are familiar and comfortable and which demonstrates your technique and musicality. There is usually some sight-reading presented as well, but the entire process is typically low stress and user friendly.
For Winter auditions, there is a prepared excerpt for each instrument placed in the Music and Dance Library (3rd floor Dalton Center) during the last week of classes for students to prepare prior to the first day of Winter classes. This excerpt and some sight-reading will constitute the Winter audition for ensembles. Sign up for a Winter audition time just as you would in the fall. Once again, auditions take place on the first day of classes each semester.
Ensemble lists are posted by Thursday of the first week of classes on the University Bands Bulletin board at the corner of the 1400 wing of the first floor studios in the Dalton Center. This provides an opportunity for any necessary schedule adjustments during the "drop and add" period. Students may find it beneficial to register for both Symphonic and Concert Band to keep the times available and then simply drop the ensemble you don't need.
