In the occupational/physical therapy clinic and gym, people who have physical or mental disabilities are assisted in improving their physical capabilities. Clients with stroke, for instance, relearn how to use their arms and legs, to walk alone, to manipulate an assistive device, or to maneuver in a wheelchair. People who have a spinal cord injury learn to adapt their abilities to their needs. Children and adults who have developmental delays learn to move their bodies in a more coordinated and effective manner, while people who have been injured, on the job or otherwise, regain their optimal level of function. The Marion R. Spear Occupational Therapy Clinic is a service component of the Western Michigan University Occupational Therapy Department. Student clinicians provide services under the direct supervision of University faculty members who are registered occupational therapists.
