Students who reflect

Students who engage in Critical Reflection are more likely

  • To move past the emotional aspects of the experience,
  • To apply what they have learned to social problems, and
  • To develop a transformed understanding of problems and issues surrounding them.

Reflection can happen in classroom conversations or presentations. It can happen in papers, journaling, and/or group projects. However, one of the most effective tools for reflection is the Critical Incident Report (CIR). In this, the students first reflect on what happened, then what they thought or felt about it, and finally how it changes their understanding of the world.

In the end, education is about transformed understanding. The CIR provides an ideal tool for demonstrating this transformation
