BASIC SURVIVAL INFORMATION
MAJOR AND MINOR COMP TICKET POLICY
All Majors and Minors get one comp per show. This includes students who are cast in shows, on crews, etc. They can use the tickets for themselves, for family or friends, but they only get one per show. Majors and Minors must get their comp tickets from the Box Office at least 24 hours in advance of the show otherwise they must purchase tickets. No exceptions.

Any Major working as Assistant Director, Dramaturg, etc. who feels it is necessary to see the show on a regular basis must ask the Director of the show to make arrangements for additional comps with the Director of Audience Services. In this situation, the Major will be granted one comp per performance. These comps must be used by the Major only (they may not be given to anyone else) and the Major must sit in the back of the house to leave premium seats for general patrons.

MAJOR COMP TICKET POLICY - YORK ARENA THEATRE

For York Shows, Majors can only get a comp for the designated Majors' Matinee. If students cannot see the Majors' Matinee, then they must attend a final dress rehearsal, the show's brush-up rehearsal or pay for a ticket to another performance. No exceptions. If the Majors' Matinee sells out, then other accommodations will be made for students who could not attend.

If any performance of a York show sells out, the only way for a Major to see that performance is to sign up for the Majors' Waiting List. Majors may not sign up for the regular Waiting List for a sold out York show even if they intend to pay full-price. Regular patrons must be given priority for Waiting List tickets.

To get a ticket for a sold out York show, Majors may sign up for the Majors' Waiting List during the day. They must then arrive at the York Arena Theatre door at 5 minutes prior to curtain with $5 cash, exact change, per ticket. At 5 minutes before curtain, if there are more than 5 seats available, those seats will be sold to Majors on the Majors' Waiting List. If you are not present when your name is called, you will be skipped. If you do not have $5 per ticket, your student account will be charged.

If there are no patrons on the regular Waiting List and there are still reserve tickets left, those tickets may be sold to Majors on the Majors' Waiting List.
PUBLIC RESTROOMS AND TELEPHONES
Public restrooms are located off the Shaw lobby, in the Atrium lobby, and in the first floor hallway next to the Multiform dressing rooms.

DEPARTMENTAL PHONE USAGE
Department phones are for business and emergency calls only. The Administrative offices (387-3220) will only accept emergency messages for students.

PHOTOCOPYING
The departmental copy machine is strictly for faculty/staff usage. Students may use the copy machines in Waldo Library or other locations on campus.

PARKING
If you own a car and want to park on campus in the designated student lots, you must purchase a parking permit from Public Safety. THERE IS NO FREE PARKING ON CAMPUS. Students with valid WMU permits (other than "Z" permits) may park in the lot in front of the Gilmore Theatre Complex (lot #33) after 5:00 p.m. every day and on the weekends or in Lot #34, across from Auditorium Drive anytime. The first row in Lot #33 is specifically designated for faculty and staff at all times except for weekends. It is suggested that you arrive for any rehearsals early in order to park by the theatre.

USE OF THE YORK ARENA THEATRE

  1. Required classes using the Arena such as Directing I and II and Acting/Performance classes. Arena classes will be given first consideration for the Arena/Green Room during the time period of approximately the 11th week through the week before Final Exams. Additional activities must be scheduled with the Arena Coordinator.
  2. Footlights I and II performances will be scheduled through the Arena Coordinator before the 11th week of the previous semester.
  3. Other creative projects such as Creative Arts Research, Honors College Performances, etc., must be scheduled around 1st and 2nd priority projects and with the approval of the Arena Coordinator.
All requests for use of the York Arena/Green Room other than regular academic class work must be submitted to the Arena Coordinator for scheduling.

FOOD

In Sprau Tower, the tall building across the Fine Arts Plaza from Shaw, is the Plaza Cafe that serves sandwiches, soups, beverages, salads and breakfast foods. There are also several vending machines across from the cafe. All food and drink must be consumed in the Green Rooms. No food or drink in the classrooms, hallways or lobbies. PLEASE REMEMBER TO THROW AWAY OR RECYCLE ANY GARBAGE YOU MAY CREATE.

PROCUREMENT CARDS
You may be in a position to use a WMU procurement card. The following are the guidelines:

  1. The procurement card cannot be used for personal purchases.
  2. WMU is a sales tax-exempt organization and that number is imprinted on each card. Each receipt should be checked before leaving the business. If there is tax, the cashier must credit the tax to the credit card. DO NOT ACCEPT CASH. Ask for a supervisor/manager if you have trouble with a cashier.
  3. Each receipt should be self-explanatory for what is purchased and amount charged. If not, please indicate. For example, "7 @ $2.00" is not acceptable - 7 what? Most auditors will not be fluent in "theatre -speak." Each receipt should also state which budget line is to be charged. Each assistant with budget responsibilities must keep a typed ledger of their expenses to be turned in once a week to Sandy stating date, vendor, and itemization of the purchase.
  4. Any purchases made without a receipt will be charged to your student account.
ENTERING THE BUILDING AFTER 6:00 P.M.
At 6:00 p.m. on weekdays all doors to the complex are locked by campus security. If you need to enter the building after 6:00 p.m. or anytime Saturday or Sunday there is one entrance designated as the Stage Door you must use. It is adjacent to the parking lot at the bottom of the outside staircase. It is the second door to the left of the main entrance to the building, and is marked as door number nine (#9).

LATE HOURS
The Department of Theatre recognizes that, by its nature, theatre requires after-hours work in rehearsals, the scene and costume shops, or on lab shows and class projects. If a student needs to be in the Theatre Complex after rehearsals or on weekends, arrangements MUST be made with the appropriate staff member. STUDENTS LEAVING THE BUILDING AT NIGHT ARE URGED TO TRAVEL TOGETHER or call 7-RIDE for assistance from the Student Escort Services.

UNIVERSITY CLOSING PROCEDURES
Public performances will continue as scheduled (unless conditions are so treacherous) that we choose to cancel a performance). In this, we will operate the same way as Miller Auditorium.

Rentals shall continue as scheduled (unless conditions are to treacherous that we choose to cancel an event or the rentor chooses to cancel). In this, we will operate the same way as the Bernhard Center.

Students may work in the building on a voluntary basis only as long as they are under the direct supervision of a faculty or staff member. Thus, students may not work in the lab, rehearse or be in the building unless a faculty or staff member is present in the space in which they are working.

INSURANCE
THE DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE DOES NOT CARRY INSURANCE TO COVER ACCIDENTS OF STUDENTS. THEREFORE, IT IS WISE FOR YOU TO BE COVERED UNDER YOUR PARENT'S POLICY IF AT ALL POSSIBLE, OR TO SECURE STUDENT HEALTH INSURANCE FROM THE SINDECUSE HEALTH CENTER AT A NOMINAL FEE.

The Health Center provides diverse services at reasonable charges. All WMU students enrolled for 5 or more credit hours are assessed a Student Health Fee as part of the enrollment fee. This reduces the amount of the charge per visit to see the clinician and entitles students to use all Health Center services. This includes use of the Sports Medicine Clinic as well as the Office for Health Promotion and Education.

Students enrolled for less than 5 hours, nonenrolled students, spouses and dependents (12 years and older) of WMU students also may utilize services by paying the Student Health Fee, or they may opt to pay visitor rates. Fees are subject to change. For further information, please call 387-3287.
