PRODUCTION PROCESS
CALLBOARDS |
| |
MAIN CALLBOARD |
| |
The Main Callboard is the series of bulletin boards located in the basement
of Shaw Theatre. All students should check the callboard DAILY. It
is here that opportunities for production involvement and important class
notices are posted. The Callboard is the OFFICIAL means of communication
between the Department of Theatre and its students. It is assumed that if
something is posted on the Callboard you have seen it. |
| |
PRODUCTION CALLBOARDS |
| |
Production callboards hold the information concerning a show that is in
performance such as sign-in sheets and crew calls. The Multiform Production
Callboard is inside the stage door (adjacent to the parking lot) at the
bottom of the stairwell. The Shaw Theatre Production Callboard is located
in the stairwell near stage left of Shaw Theatre.
|
AUDITION/CASTING POLICY FOR THE UNIVERSITY
THEATRE |
| |
The University Theatre offers students a variety of performance
opportunities, including student directed one-acts as well as productions on
the Mainstage and Studio Series and supports the ideals of color blind casting.
Casting is decided on the basis of ability, not race or similar factors.
University Theatre productions are open to any Western student who is enrolled
for a minimum of six credit hours during the semester of the production. The
following are casting policies: |
| |
- A student must have an overall GPA of at least 2.0 to participate
in the production program.
- Students with a GPA below 2.0 will be put on Departmental probation.
A probationary student will not be allowed to participate in any aspect
of the production process and will be dropped from THEA 290, Theatre
Practicum, if enrolled.
- No student can be cast in two faculty productions in
the same semester.
- No student cast in a faculty show may be cast in a Footlights show in
the same semester.
- Once a student has been cast in a faculty show, he/she must obtain
permission from the faculty director prior to accepting any other
production commitment - acting or tech. See "Auditioning and Accepting
Roles."
- Students working on scenes in Directing I and Directing II may
not use actors who have been cast in a faculty show or in a Footlights
production if the two projects are rehearsing during the same time period.
Requests must be made by the student directors (and not student actors) and
exceptions can be made only by a faculty director or faculty advisor to a
Footlights production.
- Any production that is presented within the theatre building is considered
a product of this department and is therefore subject to the same casting
regulations as all other productions. If the student is on probation and
suspended from the production program, that student may not do ANY production
in this building. These rules apply all twelve months of the year.
|
| |
For those productions created under the auspices of the Multicultural
Theatre Program, auditions are open to non-student university/community
population. However, major consideration will be given to students majoring
in Theatre at WMU.
All University Theatre productions are cast from scheduled auditions
that are announced on the "AUDITION" section of the Callboard.
To prepare for auditions for a production students should:
|
| |
- Bring to auditions an 8 x 10 photograph of themselves.
These need not be professionally prepared. A blown up snap shot will
suffice. These will not be returned.
- Read the script for the production. Copies are on reserve at the
Music/Dance Library Reserve Desk in the Dalton Center at least one
month prior to auditions.
- Consult the Audition Callboard for SPECIFIC audition procedures
and requirements (i.e., auditions by appointment, details of song
and/or dance audition requirements, etc.) and thoroughly prepare all
required material.
- Compile a personal calendar for the rehearsal and performance
period of the production, noting any possible conflicts (i.e., evening
classes, employment schedules, etc.).
- Dress appropriately.
|
AUDITIONING
AND ACCEPTING ROLES |
| |
- All Performance and Musical Theatre Performance majors are required
to audition for department productions. Any request for a release from
auditioning must be delivered, in writing, to the director of your respective
program prior to the first day of auditions. Only students with permission will
be released from auditioning.
- Students who audition automatically agree to accept any role in which they
are cast.
- Any student who withdraws from a production, other than for health reasons,
will not be permitted to audition for any production under the auspices of the
University Theatre for one academic year.
- If a performance emphasis student is not cast in the regular season auditions
and wishes to audition for a show outside of the department, they must request
permission from the head of the performance area. The performance faculty strongly
encourages participation in any production, but hopes to ensure that the student
is not missing any opportunities in the department. If a student does not seek
permission, they will be placed on probation for one semester.
|
REHEARSAL PROCEDURES |
| |
Schedules are posted on the Callboard. Rehearsal periods are normally
scheduled between 7:00 and 10:30 pm - Mondays through Fridays. Occasionally,
rehearsals will run slightly beyond this time or be scheduled on Saturday
and Sunday.
Rehearsals begin at the scheduled time. Actors are expected to arrive early
in order to change clothes, warm-up, or make whatever preparations are
necessary before the rehearsal starts.
The Stage Manager (SM) will be responsible for the operation of all
rehearsals. In the absence of the director(s), this person will have complete
authority. In the event of illness, absence or emergency, cast members
are to notify the director or SM as soon as possible. Members of the cast
cannot be excused from rehearsals without approval of the director.
Most rehearsals are closed to anyone outside the Department. Permission
to attend a rehearsal can only be granted by the director involved. Unauthorized
observers will be asked to leave. Lateness to rehearsal, absence from
rehearsal without prior permission, disorderly behavior, or poor attitude
will all be cause for dismissal from the production.
If you need to leave Kalamazoo temporarily for an emergency, be sure
to leave a contact phone number with the Stage Manager.
NO SMOKING, DRINKING, OR EATING ON THE STAGE OR IN THE SEATING
AREAS DURING REHEARSALS WITH THE EXCEPTION OF BOTTLED WATER.
|
GREENROOMS |
| |
When a production is in rehearsal in the York Arena Theatre, the Greenroom
is closed to a Shaw Theatre Company. In this case, cast and crew must use
the makeup or dressing rooms in the basement. Performance noise, both through
the speaker in the Greenroom and by company members, is very disturbing
to rehearsals in the York Arena. The same policy applies to the Multiform
Greenroom when there is a production in that Theatre. |
PREPARATION
CREWS |
| |
In addition to practicum assignment positions on prep crews in scenery
construction and rigging, painting, properties, light rigging, sound, and
costume construction are available on a volunteer basis in a highly flexible
scheduling framework. To participate on these crews, a student should contact
the appropriate supervisor.
Scene shop hours are from 1:00 to 6:00 pm Monday through Friday, during
the Fall and Winter semesters. Costume shop hours are from 1:00 to 5:00
pm, Monday through Friday, during the Fall and Winter semesters.
|
PRODUCTION STRIKES |
| |
The final performance of each production is followed by a "strike."
All actors, running crew members and tech theatre assistants are required
to be in attendance at strike. All actors should report to the TD after
removing costumes and makeup. Running crews and tech theatre assistants should
report to their supervisor. Failure to participate in strike will make a
student ineligible for future participation in the production program.
|
TECHNICAL AND DRESS REHEARSALS |
| |
Tech and dress rehearsals may run past 11:00 pm; cast and crew
members are advised to complete academic assignments ahead of time to avoid
falling behind when tech and dress rehearsals begin.
Depending on the show, various calls will be posted for tech and dress
rehearsals. Cast and crew members are expected to consult the Callboard
at least once daily for makeup and crew calls. |
REQUIRED CLOTHING |
| |
For all students, you will need to have these items
available and with you, not at your Mom and/or Dad’s, all 4 years you are
in the program. If something wears out you will need to replace it.
If you are unable to obtain certain items please purchase something
similar and keep your tags and receipts. Our costumer will evaluate items at
the beginning of the semester.

COSTUME/MAKEUP PRODUCTION GUIDELINES |
| |
The following guidelines will help make the production experience
more productive and pleasant for everyone. If you have any questions, please
stop by and ask. The Costume Shop is on the second floor of Shaw Theatre
(phone 387-3521). |
| |
- Do not cut your hair, change its color, or in any way
alter your physical appearance without the consent of your director
and costume designer. This includes: having any bodily appendage pierced,
starting to lift weights, or shaving an already existing beard.
- Fittings, makeup sessions, photo calls, etc. will be scheduled through each show's
stage manager. Always remember to report to the Costume Shop at your appointed
time. Please remember that at least six people are planning their lives around
your fitting time:
- NEVER BE LATE. There are others scheduled after you.
- There isn't an acceptable excuse for missing a fitting.
- Underwear and deodorant are required attire for all dealings with the costume
shop. We will not supply underwear and will not fit you if you are not wearing
briefs. This will be treated as a missed fitting and your costume will be placed
at the bottom of the priority list. We haven't time to reschedule fittings.
- Fitting times are mandatory. There are serious repercussions if you fail to
appear for a fitting.
- All actors are required to provide their own makeup kit for each production.
Any specialty makeup items will be supplied by the Department. Ben Nye
Makeup Kits may be bought at the University Book Store. The makeup designer
will meet with each cast member to discuss their makeup. First makeup
will be on the second dress rehearsal. Buy your kits early. Do not wait
until the last minute.
- In addition to the basic kit, actors bring the following items to the
first dress and plan to leave them through strike: Hair spray, bath towel,
and face cloth. Please put your initials on these and they will be laundered.
- Comb/Brush, Mascara (male/ female both, this cannot be shared).
- Deodorant, Makeup remover: Noxema, Ponds cold cream, Abolene,
Baby Wipes, etc.
- Other items: Moisturizer, soap, astringent, cotton balls, Q-tips.
- You may choose to bring a washable bathrobe or smock to use for makeup.
We will launder these once a week. Do makeup first, put your costume
on second.
- You will be assigned a dressing area for each production. It is your
responsibility to keep it clean and neat. We have cleaning supplies for
touch-ups.
- No eating in the dressing room or in costume. EVER. This includes
opening night chocolate and candy. Food found in the dressing room
will be confiscated. Drinks must be in a covered container and of a
non-staining variety. No cola, coffee, or juice.
- Smoking is not allowed in the dressing room. EVER. Smoking by Music
Theatre Performance and Performance students will jeopardize their status
as a major.
- When in doubt, use common sense and courtesy.
Please use stereo headphones, clothes hangers, the trash can, and "please" and "thank
you." Avoid foul language and poor personal hygiene.
- If you're still unsure stop by and ask.
|
FAMILY AND FRIENDS |
| |
Visitors, relatives, friends, and family pets, are never allowed backstage
or on stage during performances. Actors in costume or makeup are not permitted
in the lobbies of the theatres during or following performances. If you
have business to carry out there, procure someone to do it for you. Similarly,
front-of-house personnel, except for the house manager, are not allowed
backstage. Family and friends are not permitted on stage before, during,
or after a performance. Many of the settings are fragile, requiring the
kind of touch and sensitivity only a cast or crew member understands.
It is suggested that you ask your relatives to meet you in the lobby after
the performance once you are out of costume and makeup. Please do not
leave the building while still in makeup. |
POST-SHOW
DISCUSSIONS |
| |
Following specific performances of certain productions, the cast and
crews are required to participate in brief discussions with the audience on
the production. These sessions are popular with our audiences and your cooperation
is crucial to their success. |
RECEPTIONS |
| |
An opening night reception is held for University Theatre productions.
Cast and crews are expected to attend and to mix with the patrons. |
PRODUCTION PHOTOS |
| |
For photos taken after a dress or brush-up rehearsal all lighting, stage
props, and costume crew members will stay after the final curtain, along
with the cast. Specific moments in the show will be staged for the photos.
Students may order copies of any shot from the University Theatre Photographer.
Pictures will be processed only if prepaid. Information is available in the
departmental office.
|
PROMOTIONAL APPEARANCES |
| |
The Director of Audience Services and the arts management assistants regularly
schedule performers and production staff members for area radio and television
station appearances on local programs. If performances are involved, appropriate
and available costumes will be arranged by the arts management office with
the Costume Designer. |
SCENERY/PROPERTIES/COSTUME RENTAL |
| |
The Department of Theatre does not loan out costumes, furniture, properties,
lighting, or other scenic elements due to the limited and somewhat fragile
stock. On occasion, recognized theatre producing groups may rent or borrow
material from storage by approval of the appropriate staff member. |
DRESSING AND MAKEUP FACILITIES |
| |
Theatre dressing and makeup facilities are available to the Studio Series.
If the tech/dress/ performance schedule of a studio production overlaps
that of a mainstage production, the use of the dressing and makeup areas
will be planned by the Costume Designer in consultation with the Studio
Director. If a Makeup Designer is involved in either production, he/she
shall also be consulted about arrangements. |
STUDIO SERIES PRODUCTIONS IN MMR |
| |
Studio Series Productions which are performed in the Dalton Center's
Multi-Media Room will follow the general regulations for Studio Series Productions.
However, specific regulations and guidelines will be determined in organizational
meetings, instigated by the Studio Director, with the Multi-Media personnel
involved. Student or faculty designers should be included in the organizational
meeting. |
