Students with an interest in directing have many opportunities to explore the craft and develop their skills while at WMU. Students with a strong inclination toward directing apply after their sophomore year to major in Theatre Studies with an emphasis in directing, potentially in preparation for an M.F.A. directing program. Beyond the Directing I course that is required for all students, Directing II is offered every spring for students who have excelled in Directing I. Students who have completed both Directing I and II can apply to direct one-act and full-length shows as part of our Footlight series. Footlight directors can receive academic credit and are assigned a faculty adviser throughout the preparation and rehearsal process. All of the Footlights perform for one weekend in the York Arena Theatre. The Directing track is demanding and rewarding, allowing inspired students the opportunity to realize their vision and gain experience and a new perspective into the art of directing.
