are creating Web sites to support their books. Some of these are high
quality, some are public and some require passwords. Look at McDougal
Literature, Prentice
Hall, Scott Foresman,
and Harcourt Brace. For
an extensive site with an elementary focus, check out Scholastic.
Beyondbooks
offers Internet support for a wide variety of secondary courses in
English, history, mathematics, science, foreign language, and other
subjects. The fee is only $1.00 per student per year. The site also
includes lesson plans from professional teachers.
Bigchalk
is a network for teachers and students that offers many supplementary
resources, including lesson plans.
CyberEnglish is
a course created by Ted Nellen to assist English teachers using the
Web . The site has many sample English teacher Web pages and lots
of resources.
Cyberguides
are supplementary, standards-based, Web -delivered units of instruction
centered on core works of literature.
English Companion is
a site designed by Jim Burke, author of The English Teacher's
Companion. His site provides many tools, resources, and links
for secondary English teachers.
Favorite Poem is dedicated
to celebrating, documenting and promoting poetry's role in Americans'
lives. It has a wealth of poetry related resources for teachers, including
video clips and lesson plans.
The Florida State English
Education program has a rich site to support English teachers
using the Web .
Greenwood Electronic Media
provides extensive discussion of frequently taught literary works
in secondary schools and includes links to online texts. Fee-based,
free 24-hour examination privileges.
The
Henrico County Treasure Chest is a gateway site for online resources
for secondary English teaching. Its purpose is to help English,
language arts, and reading teachers access information on the Internet
to supplement their teaching.
Literary
Locales is a site sponsored by the English Department at San Jose
State University. It archives more than 1,100 picture links to places
that figure in the lives and writings of famous authors.

The School Library
Media Center also has useful literature resources for secondary

Schoolnotes is a free

Taskstream is an ass est for creating lesson plans, rubrics, and
curriculum plans. Taskstream makes it easy to link lesson plans to
state standards and it provides feedback and dialogue with professional
teachers. This site does have a user fee.
Tech Learning has resources
for teachers seeking to integrate technology into the classroom
Thinkquest hosts thousands of content-based Web sites created
by teams of students of all ages and is a model for innovative, technology-enriched,
content learning.
Track Star helps teachers organize and annotate Web sites for
use in lessons.
Web English Teacher
presents K-12 English/Language Arts teaching resources: lesson plans,
Web Quests, videos, biography, e-texts, criticism, jokes, puzzles,
and classroom activities.

NCTE
(National Council of Teachers of English) is the premier national
organization for English educators of all levels. NCTE publishes a
number of excellent journals, including English
Education, English
Journal, and Voices
from the Middle. It also has a MOO
and has listservs
that connect you with other English teachers and become part of the
discussions that are going on in the profession.
MCTE is the
Michigan chapter of English language arts teachers. MCTE has an annual
convention and publishes the Language
Arts Journal of Michigan.
ACE stands for the Assembly for Computers in English. A small
but cutting-edge forum sponsored by NCTE, ACE is dedicated to exploring
the impact of technology on the English teaching profession.
AACE
stands for the Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education.
The purpose of AACE is to promote the research of information technology
in education and to publish the results of that research through journals
like Journal
of Technology and Teacher Education and conferences such as SITE,
the Society of Information Technology and Teacher Education International
Conference.
The CITE Journal
(Contemporary Issues in Technology and Teacher Education) is the electronic
counterpart of the Journal of Technology and Teacher Education. Funded
by a PT-3 Grant, the CITE journal publishes articles on current issues,
articles detailing pedagogical practices, and "seminal"
articles about technology and teaching.
Secondary
English is an online journal especially for secondary English
teachers.
Education Week is concerned with important educational issues
and can be searched online.

through Western Michigan University. Attractive addition to your resume.
