BackgroundMy advice for freshmen, especially those facing some type of adversity, is to remember why you are coming to college. You’re coming to better your life now and in the future therefore it is up to you to make it happen and up to you to always have the faith that your aspirations will one day be your reality.
My name is Tasha and I am from Kalamazoo! I graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School, home of the Mighty Giants in 2005 (best graduating class ever…period). I was involved in athletics, student government as well as the NHS. I continue to take great pride in being a great athlete as well as student. Now as a full time college student and MOMMY I continue my academic success as well as sharing my love for sports with the youth of Kalamazoo!
Growing up in Kalamazoo, WMU was everywhere I looked! Naturally then that made me turn away from the school. I wanted absolutely nothing to do with Western (just wait it get’s better). I searched online, took tours (some great some terrifying) and still refused to look at what was in my hometown. However, after only kinda-sort-of finding what I wanted I stopped being stubborn. I looked into Western’s Psychology program and was blown away. I had no idea the prestige that this program has nationally as well as internationally. The criminal justice program was my icing and I proceeded to take my cake! I finally had found a school with the class size, location and program strength that I was looking for. (Air punch!)
Now as a student on Western Michigan’s campus I’m involved in
many activities. I’m the President of Psi Chi which is the National Honors
Society for Psychology, Recruitment Director for the Black Student Union and
a participant in the Criminal Justice Student Association (CJSA) as well as
M.O.C (Mother’s On Campus). I love all of my organizations and feel that
they produce the greatest resources on campus. Unlike most I have never lived
on campus which makes networking somewhat more of a task. However, the support
available through organizations, faculty and other students has made my experience
more fulfilling than I could’ve imagined.
