Hello! My name is Sheila and I’m from Allen Park, MI (a suburb of Detroit). I graduated in 2006 as the Salutatorian and I began with Math as my major and now I have switched to Accounting. I was really confused about the admissions process/college in general because I assumed that a lot of universities would come to me. That was not the case, but I talked to WMU’s Student Ambassadors who really helped me out and I hope I can help you with your decisions just as they did for me. I hope to hear from you soon!
When I was applying to universities four years ago, I hoped that universities would come to me and present me with options about college, but I learned that I would have to go out and find my own information (or at least request it). Before I even got the chance to call WMU, they had called me and answered all of my questions and I had a tour of campus scheduled. These phone calls and my tour of campus influenced my decision because I received a student’s perspective about attending WMU which was invaluable. I love the comfortable atmosphere and the friendly faculty and staff (I still talk with my math professor from my second year). I didn’t want to attend a large school and I knew that Western was the perfect choice for me. I began with a major in math and now I have switched to an Accountancy Major.
I lived in the Residence Hall Ackley (Valley I) for my freshman year and it was a very cool experience. Ackley was the designated Honors Community Housing and I was placed with my peers who were also in the Honors College with similar interests. I loved my roommate and I actually live in an apartment with her off campus this year. I am now the Vice President of Beta Alpha Psi, a Professional Accounting Organization, so I coordinate all of the events and help to bring accounting firms on campus to meet with students.
