Sammy's Advice for Freshman

GET INVOLVED! Make the most of the years you spend here because Western has so much to offer along with a great education!

About Sammy

Hi! My name is Samantha, but most people call me Sam or Sammy. I’m a junior at WMU and I am loving it! I am from Lincoln Park, which is on the east side of Michigan near Detroit and graduated from high school in 2005. I am majoring in Earth Science with an undecided minor in the Secondary Education Program. My favorite thing about Western is that there is always something to do and someone new to meet!

Deciding on what college to attend is a big decision, but for me it was one of the easiest. I applied to 4 other colleges and got in to all of them, but the only letter I wanted to see was Western’s. When I got the letter of my acceptance I was so excited! My family and I went on a couple tours and I realized that this was the place for me! When I got to Western my freshman year I thought that I wanted to be an engineer, but when I started taking all the other classes Western had to offer and I changed my major to undecided. After a year of being in the undecided program I found my major…Earth Science. Western helped me find the person I want to be and is helping all my dreams to come true and pushing new ones to develop.

Getting involved helps people stay at school. Right now I am involved in a social sorority and I am working at the student ambassador office. I also do intramural soccer and flag football. I also love attending Western football and hockey games! GO BRONCOS! Taking a full load of classes, working, being in a sorority, participating and volunteering with first year programs as well as being on the college panhellinic board, and being involved with sports keeps me pretty busy, but I do love to go to downtown Kalamazoo because there is so much to do! Downtown is beautiful and there are places to eat, museums, theatres, and stores. There is also a mall and movie theaters too.Coming to WMU has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.
