BackgroundKeep an open mind about what your experience will be like. Western does such a great job helping you transition so don't worry! You will absolutely love it here at WMU.
Hello my name is Nicki and I am a senior this fall here at Western Michigan University. I am from Mount Prospect, IL which is about 2 1/2 hours away from WMU. I attended Prospect High School which is in the NW Suburbs of Chicago. I graduate in 2009.
When applying for colleges I knew I wanted to go out of state. Unfortunately, tuition is almost double for most schools if you are a non-resident. I looked at many Big-10 schools in the Midwest and went for several campus tours. I had heard of Western Michigan when I was a junior in high school. I have been coming up to the West Michigan area my whole life and I knew neighbors who had attended or worked at WMU. I scheduled a campus tour and fell in love with the campus. Everything about here made me fall in love. Everyone was so friendly here which made me feel more at home. I received the Presidential Gold scholarship which helped with the out-of-state costs. I was originally a Graphic Design major up till my first semester of sophomore year. After a year of art I realized that I didn't want this as a career for the rest of my life. I changed my major to Public Relations and turned my graphic design major into an art minor. My junior year I then added a business minor called Advertising and Promotions. I am still graduating in 4 years!
I am involved in Lamba Pi Eta, a communication honors society as well as Alpha Lambda Delta, an honors co-ed fraternity. These are both academic ones, but I am also involved in a social sorority called Alpha Xi Delta. I am secretary of a business organization called Global Business Student Alliance. I also play clarinet in the University Concert Band here at WMU. I love getting involved on campus and especially meeting new people. I am gaining new friends every year and it's been such a fun time. I am very busy with my school work but I still have time for everything I love to do. Whether that be my sorority or intermural sports, I have time for everything. My classes are actually very fun and my professors create such a fun environment. I enjoy going to the football and hockey fans on the weekends. Our school spirit is so all around you and I love our Broncos.
