About Matthew

Hey! My name is Matthew and I am a Junior at Western Michigan University. I come from a small area in southwest Michigan called Berrien Springs and graduated from Berrien Springs High School.

Western was probably the school I always knew I was going to go to. There was just something about the campus that really drew me in, not to mention our engineering facilities and programs are very impressive.

When I started looking at schools I looked mainly in Michigan: GVSU, MSU, UofM, Lawerence Tech, and some community colleges. All the schools I looked at were great, and definitely hold their own, but Western was the one for me. I took two tours here as well as visited my sister (who is also a student at Western, studying Psychology). Seeing a college or University is truely one of the most important parts of deciding on where you want to go. Not just once, but two or even three times; Taking the tour but then later getting off the beaten path and finding the heart of the school. I found mine and I hope you find yours at Western as well!

I now dedicate myself all around campus. I have my job at the ambassador office helping new and potential students with any questions they may have, and also just got hired for a second on campus job. For my new job, I am part of safety watch on campus, so at night I walk around and help to keep things safe and orderly!

In terms of academics I am always taking classes whether it is fall, spring or summer. It helps keep me in the mindset of school and putting that aspect of college life first. I am part of the Honors College on campus so keeping up with academics is very important to me.

I am also a part of OUTspoken and am the current Vice President. OUTspoken is a student organization on campus that supports LGBTQ and Ally students. We have meetings every Wednesday in the Bernhard Center at 9:00pm and put on a variety of activities throughout the year including 'Pride Prom' which is a come-as-you-are bring-who-you-want prom, and a very awesome Drag show!
