BackgroundMy advice for freshmen is to branch out, try new things, and meet new people! On a more serious note: always keep an umbrella in your backpack; Michigan weather is so unpredictable.
Hey everyone! My name is Mallory and I’m a senior here at WMU studying to be a Mechanical Engineer. I’m originally from Rocky Mount, North Carolina but moved to Michigan when I was eight. I graduated from Rockford High School in 2004, and as much as I loved being a Rockford Ram, it doesn’t come close in comparison to being a Bronco!
Deciding to become a Bronco was no doubt one of the best decisions of my life, but it was not an easy one. I knew before coming to college that I wanted to be an engineer, however I was clueless as to where I wanted to go. To be honest, when I first began my college search, I wasn’t at all interested in Western. I wasn’t even going to pursue Western until my neighbor, who happens to be an engineer, told me about Western’s awesome engineering curriculum. I did a lot of research on all the universities of my interest and was very impressed with what Western had to offer. The highly accredited engineering curriculum and brand new engineering facilities at Western played a significant role in my decision to attend WMU. However, it wasn’t until I came on a campus tour of WMU during my senior year that I was certain that this was the place for me. I had visited several campuses prior to touring WMU, but Western had an atmosphere unlike any of the other universities I had visited. I believe that the college experience goes well beyond academics because you learn just as much, if not more, outside the classroom as you do inside. So, I wanted a college experience that I would really enjoy, and I felt that Western would provide me with that experience….and I have lived happily ever after since.
College life at Western is a blast. When I’m not at class or doing homework, I like to spend my time with friends (most of whom I met in the residence halls freshman year). I enjoy going to the free sporting events, especially the football and hockey games. I also play on an intramural football team. Besides my involvement with the Student Ambassador Program, I’m also involved with the Lee Honors College, the Society of Women Engineers, and I am the president of Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society.
