BackgroundThe best advice I can give to freshmen is just to be yourself and get out
of your comfort zone. Getting involved is the best way to make friends and
meet people who care about a lot of the same things you do.
Hey everyone, my name’s Madison. I’m a sophomore here at WMU majoring in creative writing and absolutely loving it. A Grand Rapids native, I graduated from Catholic Central High School in 2008.
A lot of my college decision process consisted of getting online; because I knew what program I wanted to get into I was able to go online and research schools that offered great programs in my area of study. In addition to that I went on a couple of campus tours and also contacted some professors teaching in my field of study.
I ended up deciding on Western because of our awesome creative writing program. I had read a bit about the English program at WMU and got a really great response from one of Western’s interim English professors I e-mailed. His quick response and friendly reply was a great introduction to the faculty here and made me feel welcomed at WMU.
In addition to being involved with the Student Ambassador program, I’m also a part of the Lee Honors College. The Honors College is really great; there are a lot of great opportunities like Dinners with the Dean and early enrollment for classes. Also, while I don’t live on campus this year, I did live in the Honors hall in Ackley my freshman year. Living in Ackley was great, I met a lot of cool people there and actually all of my roommates this year were people I met from my hall.
