I would tell incoming freshmen to not be shy and step outside their comfort zone. Joining RSOs and participating in extra-curricular activities are a great way to get started! Joining a club was the best decision I have made.
Hiya! My name is Liz. I graduated from Trenton High School. I am a junior at Western Michigan University. My major is Food Marketing and Consumer Package Goods.
Freshmen year I was majoring in Special Education but after a few months I decided that it was not what I really wanted to do. For months I researched and job shadowed different careers in the Business College. I participated in the Business Externship Program that Haworth College of Business puts on. An externship is a professional job shadow that helps students learn more about a career. It was a great experience and helped me narrow my choices. After meeting with my advisor, I finally decided that Food Marketing fit best with my personality and my career goals
There were a few factors I looked at when deciding on a college. Some of the factors were the size of the university and distance from my hometown. I wanted a college that was relatively in the middle range of sizes. I did not want something that was too big or too small. I did not want to be too far from home. Western University fit perfectly with my requirements. My older brother attended WMU, so I knew a little bit about the campus but when I took a tour I knew that Western was the right place for me. I loved the feel of campus and how clustered the buildings were. The campus was the perfect size!
In high school I was always involved in sports and clubs. I knew that coming into college I wanted to stay involved. The first semester I was here I was shy and did not join anything. Second semester of my first year here I received a call for an interview to be a Student Ambassador. I was super excited to be offered a job. Being a Student Ambassador helped me meet new people and come out of my shell. Sophomore year I joined a professional business fraternity and became a part of the Lee Honors College. I plan to join the Food Marketing Association in the next year. I am very happy with my decision to get involved. I recommended everyone to participate in RSOs! I also love volunteering in Kalamazoo. I volunteer at the Ministry for Community in downtown Kalamazoo. It was a great way to give back to the community.
