Liz's Advice for Freshman

Don’t be afraid to get involved. There is so much to do here on campus and people to get know. Take the first step out of your comfort zones and get involved!

About Liz

Hi guys! My name is Liz and I am from Portage, Michigan. And if you don’t know where that is, it is about a 10 minute drive from campus. I graduated from Portage Northern High School in 2008. So I am a sophomore here at Western Michigan University! In high school I was really involved in band (both marching and concert). I was part of the percussion section! And right now I am pursuing a degree in Paper Engineering with minors in Math and Chemistry.

For most of high school I didn’t think too much about college. I mean I thought about it but didn’t think about specific colleges. My junior year was when I really started thinking about Western Michigan University. Many people pointed out that it was practically in my backyard, but I didn’t care. I set up a tour and fell in love with the people on campus. I know Western is a big school but at the same time it had the small community feeling, which is probably why I loved it so much. I chose Paper Engineering as my major because I was looking into engineering but didn’t know what type. But, when I went on a field trip with my physics’ class I heard about Paper Engineering and caught my interests.

I am involved in a few groups on campus. I am currently on the executive board for the Honors Student Association (HSA) which is a group that all Honors students are automatically a part of when they join the Lee Honors College. Secondly, I am part of a paper/ chemical/ imaging group called T’sai Lun. It is a great group that allows the students to learn about the industry and get to know the other students in the department.
Additionally, I am living in Valley I in Ackley/Shilling. I live in what we call the Honors’ specialty housing. It is really nice to live in specialty housing residence hall with one of the groups I am involved with here on campus because I have classes with many of the residences. This makes it easier to do group work and have study sessions. When not in class or working as a Student Ambassador, I am hanging out with all of my friends. We go bowling, out to restaurants, attend movies, and lots of other things that Kalamazoo has to offer. I would suggest to get involved and don’t be shy to get to know people. I am getting involved and I have met many new people that I spend all my time with here at WMU and I love it!
