BackgroundCollege isn't as big and scary as it seems. Don't be afraid to ask questions to people that have gone through the same process as you.
Hi, my name is Leia and I'm a freshman here at WMU! I hail from the Rogers Park neighborhood of Chicago and I went to high school at Jones College Prep in downtown Chicago. Some of my favorite activities are dancing, reading, acting, writing and showing BRONCO PRIDE!
When I was a senior I freaked out about college applications and applied to almost twenty schools! No fun! When I first visited Western Michigan University, I immediately liked how friendly and open the campus was. Everyone was extremely nice and helpful to me. Then, when I got a look at the theatre department I was sold. At some of the other colleges I had visted, I felt like the actors at the theatre department didn't like freshman and didn't want anyone to get parts except themselves. At Western, though, I felt like the whole theatre community was so nurturing and friendly, it was the perfect space to explore all my acting talents!
Now that I've spent some time at Western, I've realized that the whole university
is just bursting with things to do! I'm not only in a play and working back
stage as a theatre major; I also participate in the Honors College activities
(Doughnuts with the Dean? Yummy) and participate in a dance club. There's never
a reason to be bored here and I love that. I also am part of the Fine Arts
floor in the Draper/Siedschlag residence hall, which is perfect for any person
going into performing arts (music included). Whenever I need to practice I
can go down to our basement and use the dance room or one of the smaller practice
rooms. It's also helpful to live with people who have the same major as you
so that you can rehearse together or go over homework or maybe just try to
figure out what the professor was talking about in class!
