Advice for Freshman and Transfer students

My advice for freshman would be take advantage of everything Western has to offer and get involved! I made that mistake as a freshman. I was scared and missed home, and not getting involved did not help my situation. Another piece of advice is to stay calm and organized! First week of classes are sometimes overwhelming and scary, but don’t freak out! It may take a few weeks to get used to things, and that is normal. It is a good idea to start out organized. It will help you through the whole semester.

Transfer students…I know what you are going through! Not only is it a rough time making sure all your credits transfer, but you also have to worry about adjusting to a new campus. I told myself to take things week by week so I wouldn’t get too stressed. Although transferring is difficult, try and look at it as a new start. Challenge yourself and try things you have never done before. You may surprise yourself.

About Kristin

Hey Everyone! I am Kristin. I am a senior studying nursing and I am currently in my second semester of the nursing program. I attended another Michigan university my freshman year and decided to transfer here for my sophomore year. I am from a small town, New Boston, which is by Detroit Metro Airport. I attended Gabriel Richard high school, a small catholic school. I was involved in outreach programs and played basketball, softball and ran cross country.

As I stated above, I am a transfer student, so I have gone thought A LOT trying to decide where I wanted to go to school. Starting my junior year of high school, I went on a little road trip to different schools and went on tours. On the tours I was looking for a campus that made me feel comfortable and a place I could picture myself going to. Not only was I looking at just the looks of the campus, but also the majors they had to offer.
I wasn’t fully happy with my first choice. Transferring was a difficult and stressful time, but I wasn’t happy with my decision, so I change it! And I am so thankful I did. I am now loving college and of course, Western. Western’s campus fit what I was looking for. It’s a big school, but there isn’t a day on campus that I don’t run into at least a few people I know. So overall, taking campus tours is probably the best way to help make your college choice.

I am involved in a few things on campus. I have been playing intramural softball every semester, I am a student ambassador, and I am a member of a service co-ed fraternity. Other than being involved on campus I love doing things around Kalamazoo. There are tons of restaurants, movie theaters, and shopping areas.

When I transferred to Western, I moved into an apartment with some girls I had meet when visiting my freshman year. I was worried I wouldn’t meet as many people, but I actually ended up loving it and meet tons of people. Becoming a student ambassador, joining a fraternity and taking classes allowed me to meet people. Transferring here went much smoother for me than what I was expecting.
