Kristiena's Advice for New Students

Dear incoming freshmen,
If you take one thing from this page at all, be it this: GET INVOLVED. There are no downsides to getting involved. You make new friends, gain great experiences, network and have tons of fun doing the things you’re interested in.

About Kristiena

Ciao! My name is Kristiena. I’m from Iron River, which is in the Upper Peninsula. (Say Yah to Dah UP, Eh!) I graduated from West Iron County High School in 2006 with 73 other people. I love where I’m from and I love where I am.

I am a procrastinator and procrastinators love to procrastinate. I, unfortunately procrastinated when it came to applying to colleges. I think my procrastination was a form of my always wanting to be five and able to frolic without worries. I received a pamphlet in the mail from Western Michigan University and felt something click. I applied that same day. When I found out I was accepted I set up a campus tour. After the tour, I knew that I was meant to be at Western. Kalamazoo was the perfect middle ground between a small town and a large city. WMU’s campus was the perfect middle size I wanted as well. After my first big step of deciding on a college deciding on a major was next. After making my senior class video, I knew the film business was where I wanted to be. My environmental studies major was recently declared. I decided that if I love the earth and environment so much, why not major in it.

I LOVE COLLEGE LIFE. There is so much to do and so many fabulous people with amazing stories to meet. I’m involved on campus and think that it’s the best thing to ever happen to me. I’m a member of various student organizations on campus, which lead me to meeting some of the most amazing people. I also lived on campus for two years and would definitely recommend it! I found it easier to be focused and study on campus, plus everything is so close. In my spare time I volunteer with my student organizations, frolic with friends, and study. :)
