Kathryn's Advice for Freshman

Take your time picking a college or university that will be right for you! Take advantage of resources like campus tours, open houses and applying for scholarships. Most importantly, the school that you choose will be your home for the next four or five years – so remember this and choose a school you love.

About Kathryn

Hey everyone, I’m Kathryn and I am a junior here at WMU. I am majoring in Psychology and Criminal Justice, with hopes of eventually becoming a criminal profiler. I’m from Macomb, Michigan, which is on the east side of the state. It’s about 25 minutes outside of Detroit. I’m far away from home over here in Kalamazoo, but I have really enjoyed experiencing how different it is over on this side of the state. I graduated from Henry Ford II high school in 2007 and came here to Western not knowing a single soul here, which was so exciting! I could not be happier here at Western and I know that I made the right choice coming here.

During my senior year of high school I applied to only three schools – WMU, Michigan State, and Eastern Michigan University. I went on tours at all three places, but was really impressed with Western and felt at home on the campus right away. I also decided to come to Western because of the great honors college that we have here. Everyone at Western was very welcoming and personable and I know that this was the place I wanted to be. I came into Western majoring in Psychology, but didn’t pick up my criminal justice major until my sophomore year. I was always fascinated by crime and criminal behavior. Talking to my advisory really helped me get on track and take the right classes that interest me and would help me with my potential career.

In my opinion, getting involved on campus is the best thing that a college student can do. It helps you network, gain experience, build your resume, meet friends, and get a great sense of school spirit. I have been involved in the Honors Student Association since my freshman year and this year I am president. I have also been a member of Western’s Campus Activities Board and I am a research assistant in the Psychology Department’s Anxiety Disorders lab.

I live about ten minutes (walking distance) from downtown Kalamazoo, so I love spending my free time down there going to the movies, eating at great restaurants (with student discounts!) and seeing shows at the Civic Theatre. Downtown is so fantastic and there is always something to do! It is easy to find things on campus to do as well – like going to Mugshots Café in Valley 2 for open mic nights or seeing a comedian or a concert brought by the Campus Activities Board.
