Advice for Transfer Students

Keep in mind how the transfer system works. From my experience, there are some general credits that can be accepted/declined that are handled by our knowledgeable counselors. For more specific courses, i.e. aviation, philosophy, etc, you will have to speak to the respective counselor in each department that handles transfer equivalency. Also, make sure the approval for the credits goes to the Admissions Office and not the Office of the Registrar.

About Kathleen

Hi everyone! I was born and raised in Wisconsin, went to school in Minnesota for a year and transferred here. You can imagine how cold it is there! Every since I can remember, I’ve loved aviation. One of my favorite quotes I really believe in is, “I didn’t believe in love at first site, until I saw my first airplane.” I grew up near Waukesha County Airport and every time I drove by, I couldn’t help but look at all the planes sitting on the ramp. Believe it or not, my dad started training for his license, but ran out of funds so he didn’t finish his training. I actually completed my private pilot certification at that airport, and always take friends up flying with me when I go home. Let me know, if you want to experience the amazing feeling you get, when you fly in such a small airplane!

As I previously mentioned, I am a transfer student, so my college choice was a bit different. I wanted a degree with aviation, but as you imagine, there aren’t a lot of schools with aviation programs. I actually never heard of any schools on the east side of the lake, and I wanted a school with reciprocity agreements. Plus Minnesota seemed to capitalize on aviation schools since there are more than 5 universities that offer aviation. I definitely did not want to go to Florida, as the weather there is too nice! After spending a year there, I decided St Cloud wasn’t the school for me. I tried expanding my search and saw Western is one the top 3 largest aviation schools in the nation, (although, I think it’s the best) and that offered more to the degree than just flying. Also, the cost of attending wasn’t as large as other schools.

I actually live in a residence hall on campus that’s part of Special Interest Housing (SIH). Henry Hall is the hall set aside for the aviation students, but keep in mind you don’t HAVE to be an aviation student to live here. It’s really nice to live in a community who shares the same interests and likes you do. In any industry, networking is key so meeting and living with future colleagues is an exceptionally good idea. I’m also involved with the Aviation Student Council-who actually put in place the bus system this past fall to our Battle Creek campus. Also, I’m involved with the Sky Broncos Precision Flight Team- which keeps me extremely busy, in addition to my two part time jobs. I love living on campus to help me keep up with what’s going on campus.
