Kat's Advice for Freshman

The best advice (I’m sure you have heard a 100 times) is to be involved!! There are many, many organizations on campus so I’m sure there is something that interests you! Also, college students do not care what you look like, they care that you have an opinion and are ready to open your mind. I’m a freshman and thought that this was not true. I wore high heels and did my hair the first week… and now I wear sweats and flip flops. So leave your heels at home, trust me. I ruined my heels the first week anyway. Another thing I would add is to bring planners, calendars, etc. Time management will probably be your biggest issue. Also, don’t be afraid to try something new and introduce yourself to someone who you generally wouldn’t be friends with. Break out of the high school mold!

About Kat

Alright guys…. My high school was huge. I graduated in a class of about 700 students. I had a 3.8 GPA so I really had a lot of options open. I wanted to major in theater so I toured Western because it has a great theater reputation. When I toured campus I ended up completely loving it. I decided not to major in theater anymore but I still chose Western for many reasons. I don’t regret my decision at all. I was scared to leave home; I remember telling my mother that I did not want to go anymore. I had to leave my friends, my boyfriend, and my family. I was the first one to leave because I am the oldest grandchild. My parents didn’t go to college so it’s something completely foreign to everyone. But I went and fell in love!!!! Not with a guy but with Western. I am learning so much about myself here and it feels like more of a home here than my real home. So don’t worry… everything is better than you think.

If you are a freshman you do not have to live in the Valley Residence Halls. I live on main campus. For my first three weeks I lived in the Burnhams. I went in blind, which means that the school chose a roommate for me and didn’t have the best time. It was alright but we just clashed so I went to my Resident Advisor and she told me that if I’m not happy they would do whatever they could to help me out. So my hall director told me I could pick a building and pick a room. I got to look at rooms and ‘interview’ girls with no roommates. I am very happy now and have my own room in Siedschlag. They will work with you if something goes wrong. Even living alone I have had the opportunity to form really great friendships.

I was very active throughout high school with theater, dance, softball, cheer, choir… all of that.I am very involved here as well. I keep a marker board so that I can keep track of all my activities because I am always on the go. I am on the executive board as a secretary for the Women’s Equality group. I am also on the executive board for a new leadership group that I helped found that should become a registered organization soon! So you can do anything you want, even as a freshman! Besides my groups and classes I am always at the student recreation center. That place is awesome! I gained the freshman -5! No freshman 15 here. I eat a lot…. The food is sooo good. But I like to work out at the Recreation Center and take aerobic classes. You get 15 free if you live in the resident halls. YAY! Also I love working as a student ambassador! So, even though I have a full load and am always on the run… I still have time for myself. I can still watch America’s Next Top Model and Greys Anatomy. Plus, I don’t get grounded anymore, which is ultimately my favorite part.
