Kallista's Advice for Freshman

Find a student organization that does something you believe in and enjoy and get involved! The best thing about college is meeting new people and having fun. The worst thing you can do is stay in your residence hall room. Meet new people, learn about new cultures and learn more about yourself! That’s what college is all about!

About Kallista

I’m from Ypsilanti, Michigan, where I graduated from Ypsilanti High School in 2005. I come from a big family with four children. I am the first to move away from home for school. I am a Christian, and I am involved with an on-campus ministry. I also stay involved with different things going on in the Business College. I love to watch (and critique) movies, sing, and hang out with my friends around campus. I am entering my final semester at western, so now I am preparing to find a job and start a career! Wish me luck!

I started my college search when I was in the 11th grade. By then I had taken my first accounting course and knew it was what I wanted to pursue in college. I looked at a whole bunch of colleges, and it was pretty much overwhelming. I had no idea where to even start. My uncle helped me to start looking at schools based on how far away I wanted to be from home, the schools with the best programs and the sizes of the schools. Having his support really helped, because he is the only person in my family to graduate from a University. I found out about Western when an admissions counselor came to do a
presentation at my school. Western sounded perfect to me. It had a great business school, so I went for a visit with my best friend. We both decided if we got in, then that’s where we would go. We ended up attending an On-site Admissions event, and were both accepted that day. We went in October, so the rest of our senior year was spent free from worry about getting into the school we wanted, which took away a lot of stress.

For my first two years, I lived in Bigelow Hall, one of the Big Three Residence Halls. I loved living there, there was always something interesting going on and my Resident Assistant (RA) was amazing at planning fun events. I lived with my best
friend for 2 years and now I am living off campus. On campus I'm involved with the Student Ambassador Office as a tour guide among other roles. I am also involved in an on-campus ministry called Collegiate, Black and Christian (CBC), it is a chapter of Intervarsity Christian Fellowship. I have had great experiences through this group being involved in bible studies, book studies, on the worship and creative team and leading prayer meetings. This past summer, I was also able to have the opportunity to go to China for 5 weeks on a Cultural-Lingual program through Intervarsity as well! In the first few years of college, I was also involved in the National Association of Black Accountants where I was first the Administrative Secretary and then the President for 2 years and a member of the Voices of WMU Gospel Choir. Between work, class, and CBC I stay pretty busy, and I have a lot of fun. When I’m not doing those things, I go to Miller Movie Night on campus, to different events that registered student organizations (RSOs) host, go to Open Mic Nights, and just hang out with friends in downtown Kalamazoo and around campus.
