BackgroundEnjoy your search for the college that fits YOU. It is YOUR decision and don’t be afraid to ask questions because they could make all the difference in the end.
Hi, I am Josh. I am a Senior from Farmington, MI which for those who don’t know, it is about 45 min away from Detroit. I went to Farmington High School and I did quite a bit. I took several AP Classes. I was a member of Model United Nations, Chess Club, and I was a member of Track and Field, where I threw discus.
My decision to come to Western was based off of several things. I knew that I wanted to be a teacher for a couple of reasons. I taught Sunday School, but I taught kindergarteners and I knew that I was not going to be able to teach young children. I also have a passion for history and I wanted to share it with others. Also, I feel teaching is a very rewarding job. It is the teacher’s job to help prepare their students to succeed for the rest of their life. When I was working on figuring out my college decision, the first was that I asked my teachers where would be a good place to go if I wanted to be a teacher. I had heard of some other universities from the east side of the state, but all of my teachers, except for one mentioned Western Michigan University. I went on-line and did some research and I found out that Western started back in 1903 as a Normal School, which means that it was a school that produced teachers. I then went on a lot of tours and when I came to Western and I immediately fell in love with campus as soon as I got out of the car. As I went on my tour I loved how people here at Western love being here. Our president of the University, John Dunn, takes pride in saying that we are a “heads-up” campus. This means that even if a person has their headphones in and trucking it to class, they still acknowledge other students, and everyone is really friendly and says 'Hello'.
College is a great opportunity for growth. My biggest advice for anyone is to be open minded and to get involved. Western has over 250 registered student organizations, and each of them put on different kinds of diverse events. I am involved heavily in Student Government. This has provided me with opportunities like being on cabinet, which has allowed me to work with the administration of the university. I also am heavily involved in the First Year Experience (FYE) which is three programs: Orientation, Fall Welcome, and First Year Seminar. Each of these three programs is geared toward helping incoming high school seniors make their transition into college much smoother. I have a deep passion for this because as a freshmen, it was these programs that made my life much easier. In my free time, I go to sporting events, different programs that are put on by the different student organizations, go downtown, and of course sleep because it is very important to get sleep so you can succeed in the classroom and ultimately succeed in life.
