BackgroundDon’t worry about what you did or didn’t do in high school; college
is your chance to explore!
Try out anything that sounds interesting: from student organizations to courses,
you are bound to find fun things and meet new people.
Hey, my name is Jessica. I’m from a small town called Farmington on the east side of the Michigan near Detroit. Before I came to Kalamazoo, I had lived there my whole life with my parents and two brothers. I graduated from Farmington High School in 2008 and became interested in Biology after taking an Advanced Placement course in the subject my junior year. However, I was also interested in branching out from science and exploring some other subjects that my high school didn’t provide in the curriculum.
With courses in Philosophy and Religion, I knew I wanted a school with a wide range of areas I could study. It was important that I feel confident that one department wasn’t better than the rest and that I would receive a well-rounded education. Western Michigan University appealed to me because of the variety of courses I could take and not feel limited to classes that just appeal to my major. With a few trips to Western, I began to see all that it had to offer not just in my academic life, but in my social life as well.
Now that I am a Bronco, I love getting involved on campus. From checking out the student organizations (with over 250 of them total on campus) to attending the sports games and theatre productions, I always have plenty to do when I’m done studying. A lot of activities are free for students like the sporting events, so I never pass up a football or a hockey game!
This is my second year living on campus and I couldn’t have asked for a
better experience. There is someone always around whether you need help on homework
or someone to hang out. Plus, with events put on by the residence halls there
are plenty of opportunities to meet new people.
As a member of the Lee’s Honors College, I have been living in the honors
housing in Ackley Hall. It’s a great place to get to know fellow Honors
students and become acquainted with the Honors Student Association, just one
of the many student organizations on campus.
