BackgroundMy advice for Freshman would be to get involved! The best way to work through the stress of things that may scare a new student is to work them out with friends. Western is a great place and is ready to welcome you. Go Broncos!
Hi everyone! My name is Jay and for those who may not know where Quinnesec is, its in the Upper Penninsula. That's right, I'm a yooper. I graduated from Kingsford High School in May of 2006 so that means I am a sophomore here at Western. My high school was very small with only about 500 students, I live right on the Michigan, Wisconsin border, so my travel home is rather long (9 hours). In high school, I was active in all governments, committees and councils, not so many sports however. I am majoring in Geography and Environmental Science
When I was in high school, I really didn't think much about the college
I was going to attend. I actually heard my dad say he had to make a visit
to Western Michigan Univeristy for his job and I asked to go with and tour
the campus. I toured many of the more local colleges the Summer/Fall of
2005, and when I saw WMU I knew I was home. The campus was so welcoming
and complete strangers were so friendly and helpful. I was also impressed
by the selection of majors which was why I came to Western.
My freshman year I lived in Valley I in Britton/Hadley. I also became very involved with my residence hall and was elected Hall President. I attended many student organizations until I found the ones I truly knew I liked. I also became aware of The Student Ambassadors which is the program I work for now. I strongly suggest to all incoming students to become active in student organizations or with the school because I met some of my best friends through them. I spend a lot of my free time out with friends going to the mall and to the movies frequently. :)
