Advice for Freshman

My advice for incoming freshmen is make sure to stay on top of your homework and study! I know this is something that is on repeat throughout our whole lives but its the truth.

About Gabriela

Hey ya'll! My name is Gabriela and I'm a junior at Western Michigan University. I am from Grand Blanc (east side!) but i was born here in Kalamazoo. I went to Grand Blanc High School and i graduated in 2009. I am majoring in Early Childhood Education and I am in love with it! The reason why i chose this major is because we all always have that one teacher we remember that may have made us feel better about ourselves or really effected and made who we are today and my teacher is Mrs. Wilson. I love the way she taught her classroom and how she made everyone feel welcome and accepted at all times in her room. She is one of the best teachers i have ever had and she is the one who inspired me to become a teacher myself.

The reason why I decided to go to Western Michigan University because of the campus and the location. I love how the campus has texture (i.e. hills, lots of trees). I like how you can walk from one side of the campus to the other and it literally takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Walking around and just being outside are things i like to do so being able to walk to my class and even get there on time is awesome! I also like how the campus is located so close to downtown. East campus actually quite literally bumps into downtown. There are so many events always happening there and the places to eat are delicious! The restaurant range from Mexican to Greek to American Grills and there are so many more. They even have a Jazz Band oriented place to eat. There is always something to do either on campus or off so I never really feel like I have nothing to do.

I am involved in the Student Ambassador Program (which I love!) and Drive Safe Kalamazoo or also commonly known as DSK. By being involved on campus, I have been able to engage and meet people that I probably wouldn't have met on my own. Its a great way for when you first get here to get a look at our diverse campus and meet some people you may consider great friends one day. I also live in the residence halls and I actually quite enjoy it. Living with a bunch of other poeple that either have the same interests as you or like the same foods as you really helps making the move into a new place an easier transaction. You also get to see the different things people do and learn about some of their favorite things as well. For fun, I like to go to Miller Movies (movie between theater and dvd) and watch it with some friends for only a $1.
