Advice for Freshman

GET INVOVLED! WMU (and Kalamazoo) becomes a more enjoyable place when you take advantage of the countless opportunities that will always be surrounding you. Tailor your WMU experience to be everything YOU want it to be. If you live on campus, get involved with your residence hall’s Hall Council! That was my first step when becoming involved on campus. Also, GO GREEK, volunteer for local organizations—just do anything to get to know your fellow Broncos and the community. Be open-minded to all opportunities. Lastly, while it is important to get involved on campus, it is even more important to stay focused on school. Work hard to find a healthy balance!

About Erin

Hi! My name is Erin and I am the biggest Bronco fan you will ever meet! I am currently in my junior year at WMU. I graduated from West Bloomfield High School in 2008 with a class of nearly 600. WBHS was a large high school with over 2000 students. I did not want to go to an extremely large university but also knew I did not want to go to an extremely small one. In my family, I am the oldest child and the first child to attend college. I was not sure where I wanted to go at first, but I can say today that I cannot picture myself anywhere outside of WMU.

After a year of touring different universities, I chose WMU for many reasons. I loved how personal the campus felt and knew I would never feel like just a number here. Kalamazoo is about 2 hours from West Bloomfield, which was the perfect amount of distance for me. Next, WMU had great programs for what I wanted to study. WMU ended up being the perfect fit for me. Through my involvement on campus, I became passionate about leadership within organizations, so I am studying organizational communication and journalism with a focus on leadership.

I love being involved on campus more than anything! I work as a Student Ambassador and I love it. In my free time, I am the president of WMU Hillel, the Jewish student organization on campus. Feel free to ask me questions about Jewish Life on campus! I also serve as the Student Affairs Chair for WSA Student Government. I enjoying being a member of a social sorority, Alpha Omicron Pi, and on the weekends I like to volunteer for Drive Safe Kalamazoo. Last year, I co-founded a student organization, “The Pink Ladies”, to create breast cancer awareness on campus. I love WMU because anyone can do anything, like starting your own club. Mainly, I love WMU because it has given me so many things to be passionate about.
