Advice for Freshman

Always tour a school before you make your college choice to really get a feel for the lifestyle there, and choose a school based on how many doors it opens for you to be the person you’ve always wanted to become!

About Emily

Hello prospective Broncos! My name is Emily and I’m from a small farming community in Grand Ledge, which is just north of Lansing. I graduated from Grand Ledge High School in 2008, where I had been involved in band, theater, German and my church youth group. I have a huge family that I love very much, including five graduates from WMU! My biggest passions are writing, music, and exploring other cultures!

I understand VERY WELL the process of choosing the right college, and the right field of study. I began researching schools on the internet as a sophomore in high school, and by the end of my junior year I had toured twelve schools across the country! I knew I wanted to write and planned on majoring in Journalism at the time. I had narrowed my choices to University of Michigan, WMU, Grand Valley and four out-of-state schools. I was accepted to all seven. After four scholarship competitions, I finally chose Western Michigan as the perfect school for me! It was the only campus that made me feel at home, while also providing rigorous academics through the Honors College, which was important to me. After taking some classes, I learned that political science fit all of my passions into one field of study, and even got the great experience of working on a political campaign in my first semester!

I live in French hall with three of my best friends! We all went in ‘blind’ last year and ended up hitting it off. I love living on campus again – it’s great to have everything I need located so close to me. I am involved in a couple of registered student organizations on campus: American Humanics Student Association, International Programs Council, and the Dominican Student Association. I have an internship right now starting an organization that supports international students academically. I worked this summer as an International Student Orientation Leader –it was so much fun! Academically, I am a member of the Lee Honors College and a Medallion Scholar. In my free time, I love to play piano and guitar, hang out with friends in my residence hall, and I really like going to see movies at the Rave, a local movie theater. I really enjoy living in Kalamazoo, enjoying downtown as well as nearby suburbs!
