BackgroundGo visit the campuses before you make you choice!
Hey! Well, I am Destinee (“EE”). I am from Muskegon MI and I graduated from Muskegon High School in the best class to ever, the class of 2007. This is my third year of college and I love it! I do miss high school though so PLEASE enjoy it while it lasts! I did many things in high school. I was a cheerleader (on 3 different teams), a member of student leadership, on the track team (ran hurtles), on the school news paper, captain of the color guard, and played the clarinet and bass clarinet in the band. Being in all these groups prepared me for college; I learned how to interact with many different types of people, and how to handle problems in a split second (I have color guard to thank for that!)
Choosing which college for you is one of the most important choices you will have to make in your life time. Since I attend Western Michigan University of course I want all of you to become broncos too, but if Kalamazoo is not a good place for you that’s fine too! One of the first steps you should do is figure out what program you would like to be in, then research different colleges that have that program and narrow down which colleges and programs are best for you. Have no ideas what you want to go into? That’s fine too!! I didn’t know what I wanted to go into until I physically got to the university in the middle of my first semester. Then you would look into what colleges best suit you as a person and which ones would seem more like home. After you narrow these colleges down I cannot say enough, GO VIST THE CAMPUSES!! Let me just be honest about something, when I was choosing my colleges I just KNEW I was going to be a Michigan State Spartan…(until I got there), don’t get me wrong I am not downing Michigan State at all it just wasn’t for ME. It was entirely too big, but I have friends there that love it. After visiting Michigan State I decided to go to Grand Valley State, I then felt like it was too small and TOO close to home (It’s about 15-20 min away from Muskegon on a good day) , and I love my mother but she was too close!! The last college I visited was Western, and when I came here It was December 1st and a horrible blizzard outside! Surprisingly, as I toured the campus in the blizzard, I knew that there was no other place I wanted to be when a blizzard is going on. So as you can see I went through a few colleges before I found the one that was just right, and this was the best decision for me, and I wouldn’t transfer for anything!
Once I got accepted and got on campus, I had to adjust to college life. Honestly,
it was very interesting experience. It was great because you have lots of freedom
and your mom’s not there to tell you to clean up your room, do your home
work, or anything! But! This also means that your mom’s not there to
wake you up for you 8 am biology class either, so with freedom does come responsibility.
Also, my first semester I didn’t do anything but go to class, judging
by all the things I did in high school your right, I went CRAZY! Even though
college is for school, no one will be studying every second they are here.
Plus there are close to 25,000 people on Western’s campus alone, if you
don’t go out and get involved you won’t meet them! Western has
300 different student organizations I know if there is not one for you, make
one! There is never a reason to be bored on this campus or any campus for that
matter you just have to go find something to entertain yourself. Another thing
that really helped me adjust was living in a residence hall. My freshman year
I lived in Henry hall. In my Sophomore year, I lived in French hall. Those
are the people that you are around most of the time so the strongest friendships
and
connections
are made in a residence hall. Plus, you are surrounded by people who are going
through the same changes you are going through, residence halls ban together
and help each other usually. In a residence hall you always have someone there
to talk to, study with, or just plain laugh at, I recommend any new freshman
to live in the residence halls at least for one year, two it possible. College
in general is a great experience and no matter where you go live it up to the
fullest, because trust me it will fly by! .
