David's Advice for Freshman

Get involved, but don’t push yourself too hard! Find one group that you really enjoy and stick to it so you don’t burn yourself out. Burning out during college just sucks!

About David

Hi folks! My name’s David, and I’m a junior here at Western Michigan University. I’m from the east side of the state, near Detroit - specifically Lincoln Park. I graduated from high school in 2007 after being heavily involved in the Drama Club at my high school.

I’m going to be honest, I didn’t do what I should have done - there are SO many things that I wish I could have known about that I just didn’t know. My parents left a lot of things up to me, and I probably should have asked for more help. A lot of my research consisted of websites and very little person-to-person interaction (something I should have changed). I ended up coming to Western on a leap of faith - I didn’t see the campus before orientation and wasn’t really expecting to like it because I had initially not wanted to go here. But then I came to campus and really got involved with OUTspoken and the Student Ambassadors and I fell in love with the community here. I just feel like I matter here - to my professors and to the faculty.

I chose Creative Writing for my major after a long process of eight different majors. I just really love to write, and honestly, I want to go into political activism - any major is applicable there! Creative writing keeps me in touch with my artistic side and gives me something to just throw myself into during late night study binges.

As far as my life on campus now, I’m currently the President of OUTspoken, the student organization for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Allied students here. It has really given me a fresh perspective on student leadership and on what kind of leader I am. It’s really given me a lot of different skills that I know are going to be important in my future.

As far as free time... I am the perfect definition of the overextended college student. Between OUTspoken, work, class, and homework, I have zero time to actually have a social life! When I do, I spend time with friends or go to movies or (once in a great while) read a book for fun.
