Advice for Freshman

Pursue your dreams, as wild as they may be. You only have one life to live and if you choose to do something you know truly love and have a passion for, then you’ll have an amazingly happy fulfilling life and make life better for those around you. Don’t let your background or the people around you determine your goals.

About Chelsea

Hey guys, I’m Chelsea. I’m from a really small town about 30 minutes northwest Lansing. I was a 2009 graduate from Pewamo-Westphalia High School, where the cows outnumber the people and the school is surrounded dirt roads. While I was there, I took a lot of college prep classes like AP Biology, Psych and Calc. PWHS has some fine teachers, but most would recognize the name from athletic events. The boys track team recently won states, and took runner up the following year, the coach of said track team, Scott Werner, was 2008’s coach of the year, our cheerleaders are regulars at the state finals competition, and so on and so forth. If you’ve ever heard of Becker’s bridal then you might know around where Westphalia is. Becker’s Bridal is in Fowler a small town about 7 miles away from mine. I worked here selling wedding dresses and loving every minute.

I choose to come to WMU for a number of reasons. The first was for the major I am interested in, Dietetics, this is like nutritional counseling. I really have a strong passion for this because I believe that everyone is unique and different and thus have different nutritional needs to suit their body best. WMU also has an Apparel and Textiles studies program that has 3 different emphasis, design, merchandising and product development. I wanted to go to a school that had both dietetics and ATS and WMU was one of the few that did. Western’s location was also appealing to me. First of all it’s on the beautiful west coast of Michigan, in addition to being a good two hours away from home. It’s proximity to Chicago is also an added plus, taking the train with friends makes for a fun and exciting weekend. As mentioned before Western also has the Wellness house for atypical students like me. This alone played a huge role in my decision. After weighing out the pros and cons of my college choices (until about April might I add) I finally made the right decision in coming to Western!

I live in Valley 2, LeFevre. The valleys are where about 2/3 of freshman live and about 90% of those in the valleys are freshman. That being said as a first year student this is a great opportunity to meet new people who are going through the same thing as you. In LeFevre is one of the specialty houses called the Wellness house. This is for students who really want to make an effort at staying away from the pressures of the typical college scene and work toward finding that balance of work, study, play, self, family, faith etc. That being said if you are a part of this house you’re required to sign a contract saying you’ll abstain from harmful substances. I love being a party of the Wellness House because I’m not a big partier, and this introduces me to others who aren’t really into partying either and would rather do other things. Some other things would be going to Miller Movies, playing intramural sports, going to games [sober], volunteering, or joining other fun random clubs on campus. If you don’t like your roommate or hall mates, no worries you’ll have classes with tons of different people and might find yourself forming a study group outside of class and eventually hanging out without the books.
