BackgroundMy best advice for freshman students is; don’t be discouraged! Your first day of college will be so different from high school yet nothing like the rest of your college career. Become acquainted with the campus before classes start, find the locations of your classes and plan to arrive early so you are sure you get there on time! I also would advise you to get involved as there are numerous campus groups and you should easily find one within your areas of interest. You will meet so many amazing people that will make this experience better for you!
Hi everyone! My name is Cari and I am from Newaygo Michigan which is
a small town an hour north of Grand Rapids. I went to Newaygo High School
and graduated amongst a class 112 other students in 2005. I was
excited to start college and meet new people and learn new things about my
future career.
Western Pride! In my pursuit for the perfect college, my choices were narrowed because of my major being Speech-Language Pathology. I chose to go and visit both schools and took a tour of each. After my tour on Western’s campus, I was sold! I love the size of the campus and fell in love with the new Health and Human services building. I chose Speech-Language Pathology as I have always been involved with children with special needs and knew that I wanted to have a career that would allow me to continue to work with this population. During high school I was fortunate enough to be able to baby sit for a Speech-Language Pathologist who, herself, had a child with special needs. This family greatly influenced my career decision.
For my freshman year at Western Michigan University I lived in Harrison Hall, which is located in Valley 3. I loved my floor because we all kept our doors open and I met two of my best friends today, whom I am still living with! I also enjoyed being able to walk to classes, as it let me collect myself and get mentally prepared for the day ahead. During my freshman year I was involved in Drive Safe Kalamazoo which gives students a free safe ride home. My sophomore and junior year I have lived in an apartment and I have enjoyed the fact that this has given me a lot of independence.
I am currently involved with The National
Student Speech Language Hearing Association which is an organization of Speech-Language
Pathology students and Audiology students who donate their time and energy
to raise money for Operation Smile. We also help each other out with classes.
Along with this organization I am involved in the Alternative Spring Break
program and will be traveling to Memphis with an opportunity to volunteer
at St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital for the week of spring break.
Alpha Lamda Delta is an Honors Fraternity in which students are able to be
a part of after their fall semester of freshman year. I have been involved
with this organization and feel it helps to keep me focused on my studies
and volunteering. In the little free time I do have, I enjoy working out
at the
Student Recreational Center and also spending time with friends by going
to Bronco athletic games!
