Ben's Advice for Freshman

So ask me about WMU and I’d love to tell you anything specific you are curious about! And, wherever you end up (don’t forget to visit the schools so you can have that “this is the right place for me” feeling), don’t hesitate to step outside your comfort zone and meet new people, try new things, and have FUN!

About Ben

Hello All! My name is Ben. Allow me to write, first and foremost, how much I love Western Michigan University: I love WMU! I’m originally from right here in Kalamazoo, MI and graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in 2008. Represent! I absolutely love Kalamazoo and the surrounding area. Don’t hesitate to ask me why either! I love to brag about my city. At Western, I double major in Organizational Communication (awesome!) and Comparitive Religion with a minor in Philosophy. Any questions about those programs or schools are more than welcome as well.

I didn’t do much college searching as a high school senior because I was set on Western very early on. But, please do yourself a great favor and look around as much as possible. I’m fortunate to fit very well here, but the more you look around, the more chance you will have to find the “place where you belong.” This might sound corny, but you will feel it when you walk on the campus where you were meant to go to school. For me, Western was amazing in terms of financial aid options, and my areas of interest, Communication and Religion. Both programs here are very attractive from the outside and renowned as proud, prestigious schools. I also like Western because the campus, although right in between the populous West side of Kalamazoo and the downtown area, is a closed –off campus environment. This allowed me to feel as though I was “away at school,” while still being close to home. It’s the perfect place for me!

Here on campus, I am as involved as I can be in my work at the Student Ambassador Program which is only the best place to work EVER! I love giving tours, meeting and helping new students, and learning more and more about this great University. I am also actively involved in the Honors Student Association (our student association for the Lee Honors College at WMU) as the Chair of the Academic Programming Committee, which involves event planning for our honors students throughout the year…like donuts with our President, Dr. Dunn! To put it in plain and simple terms, there is SO much to be involved in at Western. With over 300 Registered Student Organizations (everything from our Whimsicality Club to our student government, the Western Student Association), being an active student only requires you to step out of your back door and sign-up for what you like! This is especially easy and convenient if you choose to stay on campus your first year, a choice I would highly recommend; it’s so much easier to meet new people, especially other freshman who are in the same situation as you are.
