BackgroundCampus tours are the very best way to determine whether a university is right for you or not. So take a look at the websites and resources available, and if you feel like the school may be the right fit, take a campus tour. I guarantee this will be the determining factor.
Hey everyone! My name is Ashley and this is my third year here at Western and I absolutely love it. I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else. I graduated in 2007 from Carman-Ainsworth High School in Flint, MI and love my new home here in Kalamazoo. I enjoy being on campus all day taking classes, studying, being involved in a few different organizations, and working at my job in the Student Ambassador Office.
When I was looking at schools to attend, I visited different university websites and explored programs, majors, and student life. When I came on a campus tour of WMU, I knew this was the school for me. It felt like home (which it should, this is the place you’ll be spending the next 4 years or so), and everyone, students, faculty, and staff, were so welcoming. I am still amazed by the dedication of everyone here at the university and their willingness to help you succeed.
My major is Organizational Communication, and this can encompass many career opportunities. Once I receive my undergraduate degree, I would like to continue on to graduate school for Student Affairs. Ideally, I would love a job working in the Office of Admissions as a counselor. I enjoy working with new students and helping them transition into the university.
I love being involved on-campus; there’s so much to do here and in Kalamazoo! I’m personally involved in Alternative Winter Experience (the road trip of a lifetime!), Drive Safe Kalamazoo (a safe ride home for students at WMU), Volunteering with Kids (part of the United Campus Ministries), and have also participated in Alternative Spring Break in the past (another road trip of a lifetime!). I am also involved in First-Year Experience Programs, have been a Fall Welcome Ambassador the past two summers, and I am currently a Student Facilitator for First-Year Seminar. I’m a member of the Lee Honors College as well. I guarantee there is something at WMU for everyone to get involved in, build great friendships and networks. Western will open so many doors for you.
In my spare time I like to read a good book (my favorite genre is Fantasy),
head to the movies downtown (I love walking around downtown Kalamazoo), go
shopping with some friends, grab a bite to eat, of course go to WMU football
and hockey games (they’re free for students!), and just have fun! With
everything there is to do, I absolutely love WMU and Kalamazoo. GO BRONCOS!
