BackgroundMy advice for transfer students is to definitely live on campus for at least your first year at WMU, and get involved in as much as you can!
What it do? My name is Ashley. I am a senior majoring in Interpersonal Communication with a minor in Spanish. I grew up in Holland, Michigan and graduated from Holland High School in 2006. In high school, I played basketball, tennis, cross country, and soccer. I transferred to WMU my sophomore year and unfortunately never got to experience Residence Life here.
After attending another university in Florida my freshman year, I realized that I really missed Michigan (I know…crazy, right?) My younger brother, who is currently a junior at Western, decided to go here, and that influenced my decision quite a bit. The location of WMU also impacted my decision. I love how it is an awesome college campus surrounded by the diverse city of Kalamazoo. Other than that, it was a little impulsive, but has been one of the best decisions I have ever made! I have changed my major three times from Nursing to English/Spanish to Interpersonal Communication, and I am still not positive what I want to do, but I am enjoying the communications field a lot! I also knew all along I wanted to study Spanish and it has been muy bien!
My first year at WMU, I
lived off campus (I did not know about the transfer housing at the time)
and did not participate in anything. After regretting
this tremendously my first year, I decided to get more involved. I am currently
involved in the Student Ambassador Program, Intramurals, the Health Professionals
Society and volunteering. In my free time, I love to hang out with my friends,
go to the Student Recreation Center, play tennis and soccer, watch sports,
listen to music, play card games, eat Taco Bell, and read. I also enjoy learning
new things and meeting new faces!
