BackgroundI grew up in a small town where both my grandparents and parents graduated from the same high school as me, so moving away from my close-knit family when I came to college was a big adjustment for me, as I am sure it will be for some of you…the mistake I made was not getting involved in organizations, not meeting people in my residence halls, and I did not really take advantage of all the things that Western has to offer its students (ex. free recreation center pass, free entrance to all home sporting events, writing center, over 300 registered student organizations, and much more!!) SO, my advice to you is that after you have chosen the college that fits you the most (choose wisely it is 4 years of your life!) don’t make the same mistake as I did, get out there and be a part of your university (hopefully it’s WMU!!).
Hello, as you saw by clicking on my name, I am Ashley and I am a junior here at WMU majoring in dance. Dance is my passion, my love, and really a necessity in my life. I am from the small town of Tecumseh, MI and graduated from Tecumseh High School in 2005. I have an older sister, but am the first in my family to come to college. Other than dancing I like to hang out at the lake where I love to relax in the sun, water ski, wakeboard, and jet-ski. I am an avid picture taker and scrap-booker, but I do not always have the time because of school and work. I am also obsessed with HGTV and TLC’s home decorating shows, they can be very distracting and then I don’t always get all my homework done..oops! If you ever have a question for me please ask, I would love to help!!
Thinking back to my senior year of high school I remember it being a very
busy time so when choosing what university I wanted to go to after graduation,
I
really didn’t spend a lot of time. I went on a couple of campus
visits at Western and other schools, but only applied to two universities.
I was accepted at both universities but I really always knew that Western
Michigan was where I wanted to go because of their excellent dance program.
It was just
a matter of seeing if I was going to be accepted into the Department of Dance…which
after an audition, I was! It made my choice easy…Western was the university
for me!!
Even though I didn’t get involved right away here at Western, I am
definitely making up for it now. I have been a Fall Welcome Ambassador, First
Year Seminar
Leader, and an Orientation Student Leader. Organizations that I belong to
are: Partners in Dance, Orchesis Dance Society, and Campus Activities Board.
I am
also highly involved in the Dance Department here, participating in many
of the dance concerts as well as being a company dance member of Western
Dance
Project for the past two years. Through these organizations I have met so
many wonderful people and have really branched out of my small town roots.
It has
really given me tons of wonderful memories of being a student here at the
WMU!!!
