Background
The best advice I could ever give you would be to GET INVOLVED! Find something,
anything, that you love to do and get to it! This is the best way to make
friends and feel like an active part of any university. If you’re still
trying to decide where to attend college, just make sure to check everything
out and ask a lot of questions. Don’t stress out too much, just trust
your instincts and you’ll make the right decision!
Hey everybody! My name is Amanda and I’m currently a sophomore at WMU. I graduated from South Christian High School in Grand Rapids in 2006, but I’ve really been all over the place. I was born in Wisconsin (Go Packers!) and then grew up in South Dakota, before moving to Michigan. During high school I was on the basketball and softball teams, involved in choir, and editor of our school newspaper. If you have ANY questions, let me know, I love to help!
I really struggled choosing a college because I had always planned on going
to whatever school recruited me for basketball. However, after suffering
an intense injury at the beginning of my senior year, I realized that there
was
going to be a lot more to choosing a college than sports for me. I couldn’t
even tell you why I applied to Western, but once I toured the campus and learned
about what the university had to offer, I knew it was a perfect fit for me.
I loved the friendly atmosphere and how helpful everyone on staff was. I was
also so excited about all of the opportunities Western has to offer in regards
to career exploration and social activities. A lot of the smaller schools I
looked at didn’t offer as many majors as WMU and I was sold once I learned
about the great Communication and Foreign Language Departments here.
Getting involved on campus has helped to really make Western feel like home
for me. I’ve been very involved with the First Year Experience Programs
and have participated as a 2007 Orientation Student Leader, a Fall Welcome
Ambassador and also a First Year Seminar Student Leader. I’m a member
of the Lee Honors College and I also attend The Gathering and Connections on
Sundays as part of WMU’s campus ministries. This semester, I’m
excited about trying something new and participating in Alternative Winter
Experience (AWE).
