Allison's Advice for New Freshman

GO TO CLASS! You pay for it and schedule it on your own time, so it shouldn’t be a problem. Work and activities on campus are much easier than off campus, as they do their best to fit your schedule. School always comes first.

About Allison

Hello. My name is Allison. I’m in my third year at Western and I love every minute of it! I graduated in 2007 and moved out to Western Michigan following that summer. Before becoming a bronco, I spent my time growing up on the east side of the state. I was born into Royal Oak and, in late elementary school, moved to Troy. Over the years, I participated in many sports, choirs, theatre performances and activities to keep myself busy. Throughout high school, however, I was greatly involved with dance. I participated on the dance team through the school, along with dancing at a studio, competing during my sophomore and junior year. My graduating class consisted of over 500 students, which just made me more ready to go off to school and look towards bigger and better things.

Finding out a college for me was a long process. When growing up, family vacations consisted of taking an extra day or two to drive to our destination so we could stop and look at a few colleges on the way. Any college that had vines on the side of the buildings became ruled off right away, as I did not like “hairy” buildings. At the time, I didn’t understand why my parents did that. I was always excited for when basketball season rolled around. I attended a majority of the games at the university my dad had attended and I was determined to become a cheerleader for their basketball games. As I got older, I realized that my idea of college was much different then what I dreamed of as a kid. I then thought about going to one of the larger state universities, but thought that it just wasn’t “my thing”. I began looking into places that appealed more to what I was; instate for lower costs, a business school that wasn’t competitive, within driving distance but where I wouldn’t be seeing my parents every day. I finalized my decision when coming on a campus tour. My tour guide was excellent and the campus was beautiful. The different views that you can find on this campus can sometimes be breathtaking. I felt right at home and that feeling hasn’t left me since.

When I came into WMU, I knew that it was my chance to do something to make my mark. My first semester, I focused on school to make sure that I could handle all of the aspects of college and keep my grades up. I did, however, run for the E-board that was in my hall, which didn’t seem to take up a significant amount of time. First semester, I lived in Britton. I went in "blind" (I didn't know my roommate) and it didn’t happen to have the best outcome for me. Because of my situation, I moved to Bigelow for second semester. This appealed a lot more to me. Bigelow is a main campus hall. This meant shorter walks to class and being connected to the best dining hall on campus! I decided, after moving, that I still needed to be involved. Since I left Britton, I was no longer on their E-board. I then decided to volunteer my time to be a Student Ambassador. I became tour trained during this time, but did not perform any by myself. When sophomore year rolled around, I was hired into the office. Since the start of my sophomore year, I’ve been giving campus tours, making phone calls in the evening, and participated greatly in the business college. I never regret giving up one minute of spare time to add more campus activities to my schedule. I know that, in the long run, it will benefit me greatly and it’s made my college experience more fun!
