BackgroundCollege is what you make it, so be wise with the decisions you make.
Hey everybody! Like the above information says, my name is Alicia and I am from Flint, Michigan, which is on the east side of the state (about an hour north of Detroit for out of state students). I came from a large high school, graduating with about 360 students in 2005. I was ready to be out of high school and move on with my life, but at the same time was sad to depart from my friends. My involvement in high school was low compared to what I do now, but I wanted to focus a lot on my academics rather than playing every sport that I had time for.
GO BRONCOS! When I started my college process, I was, in a way, on my own
in figuring out the process. I was going to be the first in my family to
actually
leave home to go to college. My parents do not have college educations and
neither do my aunts and uncles. I looked at many schools, all in Michigan.
I knew I wanted to be away from home, but not too far because I am close
with my family. Coming from a large high school I also knew that I wanted
to attend
a fairly large university. Western was the last school I toured and before
I got in the car to head home for the day I told my parents that WMU was
where I was supposed to be. I loved the size, the people, and the programs.
It was
like love at first sight. I also knew from a young age that I wanted to be
a lawyer. I was excited to see that WMU offered Pre-Law as a curriculum and
not a major, so it would help me broaden my horizons. I knew that attending
WMU was going to allow me to grow as a person, a friend, and a leader.
For my first year here at WMU I lived on campus. I was in Valley 3 and had
a great roommate. I did go in blind and it worked out great for me. So, if
you are considering going in blind do not be nervous about it. During my
time living on campus there was ALWAYS something fun and exciting to do.
Just in
my hall there were activities every night that I could participate in, and
the greatest part was all I had to do was walk down some stairs to the lobby
( I could even wear my PJ’s)! I got a job my second semester as a Student
Ambassador ( We ROCK!) I was nervous at first about it getting in the way of
my academics, but it was great to know that the office respected that I was
a student first and then there was my job. It made going to school and trying
to make some money so much easier.
