BackgroundMy advice to freshman is to get involved on campus, stay busy, and remember to have as much fun as you can.
College is as awesome as you want it to be. I want my time here to be some of the best years of my life. So I'm taking advantage of everything WMU has to offer to see that through. I'm from Plymouth, Michigan and have lived in Michigan all of my life. I graduated from Salem High School in 2006 as the only wrestler/choir student in the school's history. I visit my family back home a few time during the school year and of course during breaks. I love to laugh and I hate being bored.
When it came time to decide on which colleges to apply to the start of my senior year in high school, I really didn't know where to begin. So I narrowed my choices down to schools in Michigan and then to ones that would not cost me an arm and a leg like U of M or Michigan State. I applied to Western, Central, and Eastern Michigan universities. I got accepted to all three but I chose Western for a few reasons. First, it was far enough away from home that I would feel like I was on my own but close enough to visit my family who are about two hours away. Second, I received the Dean's Scholarship and I had not received any additional money from the other schools. Thirdly, I toured Eastern's and Western's campuses and I enjoyed Western's compact campus because it would make getting around easier since I wasn't bringing a car to school. Upon coming to Western, I had started out undecided for my major but thought I would pursue engineering. Still unsure, I took advantage of the career counseling program here at WMU which helped me to narrow down my choices by showing me my strengths, weaknesses, likes, dislikes, etc. From there I chose Business Management because I like the leadership role it entails and I wanted to take advantage of WMU's excellent business program.
Getting out on my own and away from home was a little scary at first, but
I got over that pretty fast. Along with the Student Ambassador Program, I have
been involved in WMU's Collegiate Choir for most of my college career. I have
been a member of WMU's Lee Honors College since Spring semester of my sophomore
year. Within the Honors College, I am the Chairman for the Social Event Planning
Committee for the Honors Student Association. I currently live in an apartment
close to campus. I lived on campus my freshman and sophomore years;
both of those years in Henry Hall. I went in blind my freshman year and looking
back, it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I got along great
with my roommate and we still keep in touch. I met one of my former roommates
in Henry Hall my sophomore year. The residence halls have been a great way
to meet people and get used to college life. Most of my friends here at Western
have come from living in the residence halls. Western keeps me very busy so
I usually use my precious free time to catch up on sleep or just hang out.
