Community Solar Power Purchase Agreement Exploration and Next Steps

On August 24, 2017, the WMU Office for Sustainability (OfS) hosted an exploratory lunch presentation and discussion for more than 30 campus, community, and industry guests. T.J. Kanczuzewski, President and CEO, Inovateus Solar, presented information about large-scale solar power purchase agreements (PPAs). Guests networked and began discussions about the potential development of a large-scale community solar project in Kalamazoo. A follow up discussion was hosted on November 13, 2017.

PPAs show great promise and are on the rise in the United States. PPAs require no initial capital investment from the end user, and they generally require a 20-25 year lease and contract for purchasing electricity, usually in the $0.07 to $0.10 per kWh range. Photovoltaic system infrastructure can be ground, carport, or rooftop mounted.
