Addressing Concerns

Procedures for addressing concerns related to WMU Study Abroad:

Admission/Acceptance Concern: WMU Faculty-led Programs
  1. For WMU faculty-led programs, discuss the concern with the faculty director of the program during regular office hours or through email correspondence.
  2. If not satisfied by the action taken by the faculty director, complete a HIGE Concern Form and bring it to the appointment you schedule with the appropriate study abroad specialist.
  3. If not satisfied with the action taken by the study abroad specialist, make an appointment to meet with the Director of Study Abroad.
  4. If not satisfied with the action taken by the Director of Study Abroad, contact the university ombudsman by calling (269) 387-0718 or at Room 2420 in the Faunce Student Services Building.

Admission/Acceptance Concern: WMU Partner Programs

  1. For long-term study abroad programs with WMU partner universities, discuss the concern with the appropriate study abroad area specialist during regular office hours or through email correspondence.
  2. If not satisfied by the action taken by the study abroad specialist, complete a HIGE Concern Form and bring it to the appointment you schedule with the Director of Study Abroad.
  3. If not satisfied with the action taken by the Director of Study Abroad, contact the university ombudsman by calling (269) 387-0718 or at Room 2420 in the Faunce Student Services Building.

Grade/Transcript Discrepancy Concern

  1. Complete a HIGE Concern Form and bring it to the appointment you schedule with the appropriate study abroad specialist.
  2. If not satisfied with the action taken by the study abroad specialist, make an appointment to meet with the Director of Study Abroad.
  3. If not satisfied with the action taken by the Director of Study Abroad, contact the university ombudsman by calling (269) 387-0718 or at Room 2420 in the Faunce Student Services Building.

Scholarship Awarded/Amount Concern

Note: The following only applies to scholarships awarded by WMU Study Abroad (President’s Grant for Study Abroad, Global Engagement Scholarship, Haenicke Institute for Global Education Study Abroad Scholarship, the Jennifer C. Wenger Scholarship, the Bruce W. Mesara Study Abroad Airfare Scholarship).

  1. Contact the study abroad specialist for the program to communicate concern and request an explanation.
  2. If not satisfied by the action taken by the study abroad specialist, complete a HIGE Concern Form and bring it to the appointment you schedule with the Director of Study Abroad.
  3. If not satisfied with the action taken by the Director of Study Abroad , contact the university ombudsman by calling (269) 387-0718 or at Room 2420 in the Faunce Student Services Building.

Refund Policy Concern

  1. Review the refund policy in Broncos Abroad (“Statement of Responsibility” and Commitment Form) that the student signed when applying to the program. If questions remain…
  2. Complete a HIGE Concern Form and bring it to the appointment you schedule with the appropriate study abroad specialist.
  3. If not satisfied with the action taken by the study abroad specialist, make an appointment to meet with the Director of Study Abroad.
  4. If not satisfied with the action taken by the Director of Study Abroad, contact the university ombudsman by calling (269) 387-0718 or at Room 2420 in the Faunce Student Services Building.

WMU Faculty or Staff Concern about WMU SA Personnel or Operations*

  1. Complete a HIGE Concern Form and bring it to the appointment you schedule with the Director of Study Abroad.
  2. If not satisfied with the action taken by the Director of Study Abroad, make an appointment to meet with the associate provost of HIGE.

*If faculty or staff wish to express concern about the director of Study Abroad, they should make an appointment to meet with the associate provost of HIGE.

Partner Universities and Approved Third-Party Provider Concern

  1. Complete a HIGE Concern Form and attach in an email to the Director of Study Abroad.
  2. If not satisfied with the action taken by the Director of Study Abroad, contact the associate provost of HIGE.
