| Each of the measures of institutional effectiveness appears as part of the university scorecard. A status indicator appears far left column, along with other values that describe the status of a measure. These indicators allow the user to see detail about how far above or below the peer average the measure is. The symbol and color depend on how the measure performs compared to the peer average and are based on the tolerances set. The current tolerance is set to 10% of the peer average. |
| Symbol | Color | Performance |
|---|---|---|
| Green | More than one tolerance above target | |
| Partially Green | Within one tolerance above target | |
| Yellow | Within one tolerance of the target | |
| Partially Red | More than one tolerance below target | |
| Red | More than two tolerances below target |
| Also provided is a trend indicator, just right of the status indicator. The trend indicator shows the direction of change in the performance of a measure (i.e. whether it is improving, staying the same, or getting worse). Trends are determined by comparing performance from one year to the next. The trend indicator shows an improvement or a decline in performance using up or down arrows and based on whether the performance has changed at least 5 percent. A dash is used to indicate no change or less than 5 percent change. It is important to note, that a performance improvement can be represented by a green down arrow if a decline in the measure value indicates a positive. |
| Data provided with each measure include, in order of column appearance, the value of the indicator for WMU (Actual), the percentage change from the prior year (Actual Change %), the peer average for the same year (Peer Average), and the time period of the data presented (Time Period). (Depicted below.) |
| Metric Type Name | Actual | Actual Change % | Peer Average | Time Period | ||
| Six-year graduation rate | 55.9% | 7.09% | 55.9% | 2005-06 |
| As an illustrative example, if one were to examine the six-year graduation rate measure, one would see that WMU’s six-year graduation rate for the 2005-06 cohort is 55.9%. The change from the prior year’s six-year graduation rate was 7.09%. The average six-year graduation rate of WMU’s Carnegie peers was 55.9% for the same cohort. Therefore, the status indicator is a partially green circle indicating that WMU’s six-year graduation rate is above the peer average but not by more than 10% of the peer average. The trend indicator is a green up arrow because the difference between the peer average and WMU’s actual six-year graduation rate increased over 5 percent between the 2004-05 and 2005-06 cohorts. |
