Six of the 18 classes offered for graduate students in the WMU speech language pathology curriculum were modified to address the competencies needed for the students involved in this project. Those seven classes are:

  1. Normal Language Acquisition and Behavior
  2. Computer Analysis of Language
  3. Disordered Language Development
  4. Principals of Professional Development
  5. Phonological Disorders
  6. Language, Communication and Culture

Also, specific practicum assignments were chosen for these students based on their relevance to the project.

  • Head Start
    • Classroom-based (preschool) language and literacy support services
    • Twice per week for 2 hours each day with staff collaboration
  • Children’s Trauma Assessment Center (CTAC)
    • Transdisciplinary team assessments with OT, social work, and physician’s assistants once per week for 5 hours
    • Assessments and recommendations to support the language and literacy development of children with traumatic histories
  • Writing Lab
    • Classroom-based (3rd grade) language and literacy support services
    • Twice per week for 1.5-2.0 hours per day with staff collaboration
  • Rural Health Education Summer Program
    • Migrant Head Start Programs
